The difference in diameter between those two tires would be just under 1", and represents about 4%. The max difference generally recommended is 2%. Your odometer and speedometer would be off, your ABS may not work well, and you may have clearance issues.

You could always upsize as most people who get non-runflats are running 225/40-18s up front and 255/35-18s with no issues. So, you may want to look into those, or just the rears perhaps. I think you could always upgrade to the new michelin pilot a/s 3's which I believe come in our stock sizes, too, but am not sure, and may be pretty expensive.

I may just upsize the rears to the 255-35-18....it wont rub or damage the fenders though right?

I haven't done it as I went with stock sizes so don't want to tell you yes for sure, but the majority of forum members I can assure you went up to 255s with no problems whatsoever. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me will chime in shortly though.

They "probably" will not rub. But that all depends on the tire you choose. Because two tires(different companies) of the exact same size will in fact be of different sizes!

I went with Michelin 225/255's and had no real issues with tire rub. I heard some light scraping two or three times, then nothing more. I really think this is the perfect tire size for our cars. Heck even BMW has gone to this size on the F3x's.

Send @Gill@Tirerack.com a PM and see what his thoughts are.

I ran up-sized Conti DWS on my 09' 135i (225/40-18s up front and 255/35-18s in rear) and can assure you that there were no fitment issues whatsoever.

I put Michelin A/S3s on my stock wheels, in the stock (M Sport) tire sizes of 215/40-18 & 245/35-18. Obviously they fit perfectly, being stock sized, receive great reviews on Tire Rack (I'm a Michelin fanboi), and so far work great although haven't driven them in snow yet. If all seasons will meet your needs, these come in stock sizes and work well.

2015 BMW M4  [0.00]
2013 BMW F30  [0.00]
2014 BMW F22  [0.00]

OP - Don't go for a 245/40/18, it's too tall. A 255/35/18 is probably a better option for you.

I have a set of DWS on my SL and loved it much more than my previous set and was also considering running them on my 1er as a winter setup but I also had the same issue as you did but I think I'm going to with the michelin route and give that a try seeing as I have yet to see any negativity on them.. I just have to figure out what sizes to put on.
