HELP with Error Message

Hey Guys,

I got a real shocker yesterday on the way to gym, my 135i came up with an error message that read:

"Engine Fault! Reduced Power"

But the car didn't feel like there was any less power...When I pull off, I let the car idle for about 3/4 mins and then switched of and on again. The error message didn't pop up again today and the car seems fine.

If anyone knows what the heck just happened there, please let me know.

Someting failed, it could have been a momentary fuel pressure symptom. Go to your dealer and have them read the code.

Hey guys,

Shifty, no loss in power whatsoever, it didn't even shudder, backfire or smoke...

I got some advice, and he says that it's probably an inferior fuel problem.. Is this a possibility -(I did fill at a garage that wasn't my first choice the other day)?

Have u added an ECU by any chance?

Extract from your garage

...Performance/Handling Modifications

Its a secret

This will throw out an error message like that...

error messages with an ECU chip would also include something along the line of a torque limit exceeded. If you have ecu'd, there are a few bmw people at a few garages that will bypass the mod. You just have to know who to talk to

If it is the fuel, (and im going out on a limb here) the filter or something(not to sure) might have had a build up of carbon(?) which could cause the HPFP to have problems

I'm almost certain it is the HPFP...may have something to do with the fuel...

I was told to only use 95 octane... O_o

What exactly did u put in

Thats exactly what happened on mine, I was driving medium to hard and then the message popped up, when I switched it off and back on again, the message was gone and hasn't appeared since.

Shifty.. Like you said, I only ever fill 95 octane..

Happened to me yesterday after I filled up with 95 Octane from Shell on the M2 highway. Pulled off and drove for about 10 Kms and the light came on. Called Lyndhurst Auto explained what happened. I was told to pull over on the side of the road, switch the engine off and on again. Light disappeared. It might have been inferior fuel with particles that upset the catylyst converter I am being told. Now I'll be extra carefull where I fill up...

I also believed that...but I think this may be related to a dodgy filling station rather than a dodgy fuel type...? Correct me if I'm wrong 135Freak.

Off Topic...what fuel do you guys generally stick to? Obviously its 95+...but shell, bp, engen...?

I've had dodgy Shell before...repeatedly. In fact I had ongoing fuel consumption issues until I started changing my regular filling station from one of the nearby Shells to a nearby Caltex.

My average consumption used to be ~16.5l/100km. It's now around 13l/100km. Yes, partly due the engine now being run in, but the biggest change happened fairly quickly after I changed filling stations.

No suprise then that my fuel pump packed up at a very low mileage (they usually last at least 10,000km before dying; mine lasted only 2,100km). Sure, the 1st and 2nd gen pumps die anyway, but fuel quality affects how soon it happens. 3rd gen pumps can generally cope with whatever is thrown at them (within reason).

It really is more a case of the particular filling station rather than the brand. I try fill up at the same station whenever I can.

Guys remember that in the stations that are not frequently visited, couldnt the petrol in the tanks cause some sort of impurity or even cause the fuel to go off? I normally stick to going to gas stations which tend to be more busy. I normally take Shell or BP 95. Im on my own budget but theres no way im saving money by putting 93 in.

Just becarful with your fuel pumps. There has been quite a few cases on the main forum where 135's HPFP has failed on the high way. I dont think that would be a fun thing to go through!

95 Octane is a must up here at the reef, you feel loss in power with 93 up here - filled my Z4 up once and the power losses were absolutely ridiculous..the 1er only gets fed 95 regularly!

As for consumption, the 1er has leveled off at around 12.1 l/100Km which I think is brilliant(Even though I do drive the car hard often)!

Amazing! I'm averaging on 14.2 l/100KM at the moment.. Got it down from 17.4..

120i Cabriolet..

Will try BP or another fuel out and see if that helps. Or try to lighten my foot..

I'm getting around 14.9 with 1 000km's on the clock. I do think this will come down further...but I do push it (no lectures on running a car in...thx )

It dropped from 18.1 so I'm pretty happy with where it is at the moment.

Oh...and I'm using BP95

I triggered a system shutdown when I spun off at Phakisa - restored itself after being shutdown and restarted. I have an OBD dongle that I use to check for error codes, nothing logged. Obviously the system shuts down if it gets abnormal readings from the various accellerometers, yaw sensors, ABS sensors, etc, which generally happens when you're flailing around at 190... (not to mention the "nearly-shat-your-pants sensor in the driver's seat).
The dodgey fuel scenario also makes sense - is going to mess with air-fuel ratios and confuse the ECU as well.

I use Engen 95 pretty religiously - get about 11.5l/100 and she pulls like a train.
