That inner light is there because tho USA also gets AHL (adaptive head lights - ie lights that turn with the steering wheel). That inner lamp lights up as a corning light. The outer Xeon turns up to 30' to "see" around corners as you drive.

RoW (EU spec) cars also can have AHL. It is an option. But in Europe they have clear corners.

1er LCI with AHL

Xeon's with AHL

Xeons without AHL

In Europe you have THREE headlight options. The base headlights are halogens. Then you have Xeon's and then Xeons with AHL.

for some reason, the xenons without the AHL looks better, as it has 2 projectors ..never noticed that until now

Yes, I think so too. But it only takes one test drive at night with
AHLs to be sold one them!

The lamp inside the second corona (inner side) is not merely a feature to show to oncoming traffic that you intend to turn, in addition to the blinker - its main purpose consists of adding light to the dark side of your choice. This corner-illuminating lamp only operates if the light switch is in "automatic" position (10 o'clock position).

1er 2013 Manual, pp. 102-103 (http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showp...82&postcount=1):

"Adaptive Light Control
The concept

Adaptive Light Control is a variable headlamp control system that enables better illumination of the road surface. Depending on the steering angle and other parameters, the light from the headlamp follows the course of the road.
In tight curves such as on switchbacks or when turning, at speeds up to approx. 40 mph/70 km/h, an additional cornering light is switched on that lights up the area inside the curve.
Activating Adaptive Light Control
With the ignition switched on, turn the light switch to position 3, refer to page 101.
The corner-illuminating lamp is switched on automatically, depending on the steering wheel angle or turn signal indicator.
Standstill function: to avoid blinding oncoming traffic, the Adaptive Light Control does not direct light toward the driver's side when the vehicle is at a standstill.
When you are reversing, only the corner-illuminating lamps are switched on and active on both sides.
Malfunction
The warning lamp lights up. A message appears on the Control Display.
The Adaptive Light Control is malfunctioning or failed. Have the system checked as soon as possible"

An additional answer to the thread title:

The US headlights (adaptive Xenon) are qualified for European markets; with open bonnet, check for the Ex imprint on the top of the housing

Great info.

My Valeo adaptive bixenons have E9 mark (even though they don't follow ECE beam pattern.
)

But, as mentioned, they should still be good in Europe.
