POLL: Who wants a plug & play 255/275 wheel/tire setup?
I've been talking to D-Force wheels trying to get them to manufacture the EmPower wheels with a 135i specific offset. The exisiting 18x8.5 +40 wheel is already green light for a "no rub" 255/35/18 front setup. However we really need a plug and play solution for the rear of this car.
The 18x9.5 +43 rear wheels you see in the pictures "fit", but under hard cornering the tire will rub. Even with some minor fender rolling you can't get these to be 100% interference free. If D-Force (or anyone) makes at 18x9.5 +60 offset, this will be a plug and play solution for a 265/35/18 or 275/35/18. So, if you guys like the wheels and would be interested in this, please cast your vote and post your interest. These would most likely be offered in the silver w/ polished lip you see in the pictures and an anthracite w/ polished lip. Thanks guys! The pic below is the 18x8.5 all around. What we're going for here is the 18x8.5 front, 18x9.5 rear staggered setup which will allow us to run a 275 or possibly a 285 in certain brands. Tires like shoes run a bit wide/narrow from manufacturer to manufacturer. |

A plug-n-play 18" setup would be great and the EmPower wheel is OK, but I don't like the polished rim. I want a wheel in anthracite/gunmetal without a polished rim--like the LTW-5.

"Plug and play" would be a setup that you just mount your wheels and go.
Currently if you want to run a wide setup you have to do some rolling/modifying to get the tires to clear the fender. Or you just have to live with some rubbing of the tire on the body of the car. |

You can contact V-Fiber. They are the ones who are making the full 4 pc kit. You can buy the kit piece by piece, or the whole kit.

My setup was BBS RG-R 17x8 et40 and 17x9 et42 in Diamond Black finish. Surprisingly, the fronts cleared the brake calipers by 3mm, but the rears only have ~1mm on my 135i, not enough for heat expansion IMO.

I have been combing the forums for someone to simply say that they have a plug-and-play wheel/tire combo for the 135i that will support the most rubber on a pretty standard car. Seems the easiest question in the world, yet I can't find a thread to answer it.
Sure, there are lots of mentions of 18" x 8" Volks and similar to go around, but that is leaving a lot of potentially fit-able rubber on the table. A Volk 8" on the front and 9" on the back with the right offset would be fine, but doesn't exist from what I can tell. You can get the Superleggera setup like that but it is heavy. The lighter wheels are all 18"x8" all around. I like the look of these wheels quite well, actually. I've seen some I like a little better, but the pricing on these is also quite good and good quality ratings. In short - I'd buy these in a heartbeat if they were available today. I'm probably willing to give myself another two months to buy wheels/tires since I won't get track time before that. The run flats have to go soon, and wheels get purchased then too. Yes, make them and let us know how to buy them asap!

seems like a great idea but...
since theyre gonna be track wheels, why not try and make those "plug and play" sizes in the LTW5 wheel design... it is waaaaaay easier to clean a 5 spoke wheel than the EmPower's Mesh design.. just a suggestion |

You should start a new poll and see the response for having the LTW-5 in a proper offset.
I would be on it in a heart beat! The rims look great and are light enough for track/street work. Do it!!!!!

Why would these need to be "track wheels"? They look fine for every-day too, have a nice lip, good color (goes with my silver), and I was of the impression they are plenty strong. 18" is certainly as big as I'd ever want on a street wheel/tire combo anyway.
If the poster is right about taking that much rubber plug-and-play that is awesome. None of the other wheel buys seem to think that much rubber and wheel width will quite fit without rolling or or suspension work. But seemed borderline so... Price would be the one factor to visit, but that is competitive I imagine. Work out a deal with good tires and TPMS already mounted and we're golden So demanding... I am ok with a grey or silver LTW-5 as well. I am quite a bit less worried about the style/look that the simplicity, assurance of work, weight, and rubber.

The wheels are very reasonably priced and I would consider them lightweight for a cast wheel. I imagine that the pricing would be right in line with the current sizes available; right around $300 per wheel. We are not a wheel/tire shop though. We're just putting this info out there so us 1er owners have a proper wheel tire setup. The offsets on the 1er are so unusually high that no performance wheels exist yet, unless you go cu$tom. The only other cars that I know of that use offsets this high are the S2000 & Corvette. All of the wheel companies had to make specific wheels to fit those vehicles so we could stuff decent sized rubber under there. Quote:

If you are looking at making plug and play options I know alot of people would love a wheel that would allow running 245s all around without stagger rims. Theres less grip than this but it would make it a more streetable setup to me. So I think the poll needs another opetion

The D-Force EmPower's in question are non-stagger compatible in a 245 setup. Order all 4 wheels in 18x8.5 +40, wrap them in your choice of 245/35/18 tires. |
