Done. Used the plastic mesh. When I get a chance I'm probably going to switch to the metal stuff. The plastic stuff was a little tough to keep in place but overall I think it came out good. I used 3 coats of flat black and gloss top coat for the paint. Also happy that the muffler is not as noticeable with the coat of high temp flat black.

You have any pics of how you stuck the mesh to the back?

Unfortunantly I don't. That was the only problem with the plastic stuff. I had a bit of a hard time getting it to stay bent enough over the lip for the adhesive to hold. I managed to get it to stick but this is where the metal will work much better. I've actually already cut the metal mesh using the plastic insert from the diffuser as a template. Just have to paint it.

BTW....I essentially did it like the pic below (minus the coke cans). This pic shows metal mesh and you can see what I mean about bending it over the lip and having it stay put. Check the post in the DIY forum for more info.

Did mine over the weekend.
Step 1 was to take the face plate off the diffuser. I used some right angled pick tools recently purchased and it's held on by doubled sided tape: Step 2 was to cut off the back of the opening. I used my Dremel (also recently purchased and set it to 5mm) to cut out the opening, working from the back of the diffuser: Step 3 was to sand the back down just to get that clean look: I used some aluminium race mesh for mine, but you need to get the bends correct first time round otherwise it snaps after a few corrections. Luckily I had enough for a second attempt. Where I had to bend it I cut the mesh into strips of around two diamonds and bent each set individually. Then I glued it all in and waited over night. It went on yesterday but was raining so didn't spend too much time outside. Apologies for the quality of the photos but I've tried to explain the techniques I used to help any else attempting this mod. Have fun!!!

Thanks, one of the real problems I had was making it look symmetrical.
I wanted to make sure I had the same area of each diamond on the mesh showing on the left and right hand side, were it disappears behind the diffuser. And of course it also had to look level, horizontally as well. As long as you take your time, measure twice and cut/bend once, you'll get there.

A truly functional rear diffuser does just what its name implies. It diffuses (scatters) the flow of air as it passes the car, thus reducing drag. However, the 135i like most cars has a simple fascia, not a diffuser. This does nothing at all for performance or aerodynamics. Cutting it open as in this mod does allow trapped air to escape and fill the void behind the bumper. This could reduce drag I suppose. The ideal item for the rear of a high speed track car would be similar to what is often seen on a Lotus.
This pulls the car toward the ground as the flow of air is forced into a larger volume at a constant speed. Last edited by keithbickford; 06-23-2014 at 02:06 PM.. |
