Received my VIN! First Production of US bound 1M

I have just received my VIN number from my dealer.
The unit is currently on the line, with a finish date of the first week in March.

(ahem ... excuse me, pls)

The dealership has confirmed that there are six units from this first USA production that are allocated to the region BMW calls "South" - Texas, Florida, Georgia and Puerto Rico. Texas is receiving 1 unit.

"Inventory" cars are being held for now. Only orders from allocations are being produced.

Also confirmed is what Scott 26 and others have alluded to: there is just not enough line capacity to produce greater numbers of 1M units. It has something to do with the fact that the 1M is something of a hybrid between the M Division and the 1 Series production. Production of the 1M has to share facility time with ongoing, busy lines and the M3 is selling in high volumes right now.

Cheers! When will you get yours then?
Btw: The M3 is not produced in Leipzig, it's just the 1-Series. So no impact on high selling M3s there.

Maybe he meant the limitation was on the M side because they have M3 production

Good news for you!

Actually the M3's are built here. http://www.bmw-plant-regensburg.com/.../en/index.html

The 1M will be built here. Note the Liepzig plant can produce 740 cars per day.
http://www.bmw-plant-leipzig.com/lei.../en/index.html

I am hoping that BMW can squeeze in a few more 1M's this year.

My 335i was built at the Liepzig plant back in 2007

The 1M is not produced by M-GmbH, it's produced in line with the other 1-series cars in Leipzig.

Probably...

1M is using M3 chassis, suspension, steering and braking components.

Cars take a while to get here. (Boats aren't that fast) If you paid a private firm to ship for you (and got lucky enough to get a slot on a ship that is almost full and ready to leave) you would still wait an average of 45 days. So, considering the logistics involved, I'd say that's a pretty reasonable ETA.

But they are using parts from M. I dont know what is sent to Leipzig pre assembled, but even drawing from the parts bin puts a drain on resources for the M3. So these parts need to accommodate both production runs.

It isn't just the logistics, the official US release date is May 14th. Just like with the release of the 1-series in 2008 the car will sit at the VPC until May 14th.

Ha, thanks, guys. You're good people.

The easy option was Valencia Orange!
I have a love/hate about the other specs. Everything about the car and me screams "keep it stripped." Then I think about its everyday use (a stick should NOT be used while on the phone, although I've got the technique down ... )
I wanted manual seats ... until I thought about the lumbar support.
etc., etc., etc.
I finally said "to heck with this" (something more caustic, actually) and just ordered everything. Mixed feelings here, so we'll see.

There will def be more for us down here in subsequent runs, but it sounds like the numbers per run aren't going to ramp up significantly.
Good point about the M3 line. FWIW my Service Advisor said that the 1M does require some input / overseeing from the M Division, and that is a small component of the reduced capability.

I have been told to expect the M by the end of March, first week in April at the latest. I told my SA I didn't think that would happen, and he said, "oh, no. It'll be here."
So SamS ... let me know if you want to get your eyes and hands on it. (I'm serious ... )

Gotcha. Didn't even think about that. Still a pretty good timeline anyway.

What about just ordering more of that M parts then? I guess all that casted supension stuff is pre-assembled anyway.

I don't see any resource conflicts here. The 1M is produced like every other car in Leipzig, just with some other parts. I don't see where the 1M should be all that special in terms of production?

I am a bit skeptical they will deliver it prior to the May launch date. But for your sake I hope I am wrong. Otherwise awesome news. Very envious as I sit around waiting to receive an allocation...

I would be pretty fun for someone to be driving one around before it even shows up in the BMWUSA configurator.
