They are illegal in Canada, Virginia and Washington DC. Otherwise totally legal in the US for personal use vehicles.
They are frowned upon by LEOs - you can't really say "Oh... sorry, sir. I wasn't paying attention to how fast I was going." When you have a radar detector you are PLANNING to speed. I would say more likely to get a ticket. There is no "blacklist" for people with radar detectors. That said, when I have been tagged with a radar detector on my dash, I stash in in the glove box as soon as I see that a cop is onto me, so there is no sign of it when he walks up to the window. (try NOT to look like you are hiding an ounce of blow with beads of sweat running down your forehead) In reference to my above post, I would not say that radartest.com is the definitive radar detector test site; in fact some have suggested that it is somewhat biased or influenced. radardetector.net is a forum similar to this with lots of information. |

It will be the first thing I do. I mount mine high on the window, and the police never even notice it is sitting there. I run a wireless Solo2 in my x3's window, and a hardwired passport in my other car.

In Virginia, Wash DC and Canada it it illegal to USE a radar detector. I know police in Virginia and
Canada use radar detector detectors (RDD) called Spectre and VG-2. I believe that if caught, yours will be confiscated. I believe that the Bel STi Driver radar detector is completely invisible to these RDDs (the only one). |

This is true, for some reason, the roof functions module (FZD) is a bitch to remove on e9x's.

Anyone know of any sites showing how to hardwire a detector into a Bimmer?

I am unlucky enough to live in the only state in the US that prohibits radar detectors. I'm really going to need one when I bring my 135i home though, for obvious reasons. I'm concerned about the radar detector detectors in use in VA. I am really leaning towards the Valentine 1 (used by the majority of Gumball racers) but the undetectablity of the Bel Sti Driver has its perks. Two quick questions:
If the radar detector's power is cut-off, then it is no longer detectable, right? :iono: Has anyone come across a hardwiring install that incorporates a flipswitch that cuts power to the radar detector? Thanks everyone for your insight. I love this forum!!!

As long as they don't detect you first You should go with STI and not worry about, I have read many reviews and you can't got wrong with either one of them, although the arrows on the Valentine are very useful. |

Whattaya think? Again, this brings me back to my earlier question: If power is cut-off to the detector, is it still detectable by radar detector detectors?

The detectors emit radio frequency (noise) that the radar detector detectors detect So if you turn it off, police will not see it. I've seen some V1 set-ups where the antennas were placed under the grill and in the back, plus a concealed display, so no one will see it either, but thats a lot of money. I use escort 9500i and like it a lot, but I also had V1 and miss it a little bit.

Again, radardetector.net - pics of custom installs, inline power switches, lots more. Even some police officers read and post their perspectives there. Most importantly, good instruction on how to use any radar detector and driving techniques to avoid being caught while "accidentally" exceeding the speed limit. (a radar detector isn't a license to put your right foot on the floor) (I have no affiliation with the above website; I just found it a few weeks ago. A great read, though.) |
