1 series - discontinuation?
If you look at BMW sales, the 1 series is far trailing the 3 series.
In addition, I just read that BMW is going to halt production at some of their plants, due to the economic woes worldwide. Do you folks think that the 1 might be discontinued in the future? (2-3 years from now) We have seen alot of small BMW models come and go... Based on the sales in the US/Canada vs. 3 series, what do you think will happen long term? I'm starting to think it may to be discontinued.

the 1er sales have no choice but to trail 3's as long as production numbers are far lower. As long as they don't end up with 1's sitting around on lots not being sold I think they will continue production.

The 1 series? I don't think that would happen. It is a very popular car, even before they were selling in North America. I could see the N54 being replaced with the turbo diesel though.

If they do that I will stop driving my 1 and put it in storage. 2008 1 series will become a collectible :-)

Kcobra - the 1er was never intended to sell in the same volume as the 3 - the three should sell at a 20x rate. BMW NA (US) has only intended to bring in 10K 1ers in the '08 MY and the sales are on target to meet that goal (or slightly underachieve it). The 1er is a niche product in the US/NA market.

Everything trails the 3 series in sales. By that logic, they should stop building everything but the 3 series. Thank goodness they don't think that way!
The 1 series is not going anywhere. Don't make up scenarios based on assumption. It just leads to needless panic. |

I'm not too sure of the longetivity either. I've seen two Nissan GT-R's. I've seen 4 1series since they debuted. I live in FL for crying outloud. I've seen everything. And I mean EVERYTHING.

Even though the numbers are down in comparison to the 3 series
I still only found 2 135i's at the dealers in dallas/fort worth/plano, and all of the 135's they had on order in 111 status have already been sold only reason i had to order a brand new 09! i don't see them going anywhere... |

I would imagine that BMW met their target for 08 1 sales. The numbers they were reporting throughout the summer projected that all 10000 would be gone by Sept/Oct which is when the 09s would start arriving. They did NOT meet their target for 3 sales - not even close. Were they hoping to have a bigger 1 series target in 09 - probably. Will they now - no, but not because of the car, because of the economy. The US 1 coupe was never intended to be a mass market vehicle like the 3. As many people noted when it came out, it's in a very specialized market segment with a relatively limited pool of consumers. Given the many millions invested in develoing the 1 coupes, they won't disappear unless they stop recouping that investment and/or BMW is in desperate straights and has to toss overboard everything that can't bring in large amounts of cash (not likely - yet).
The crash in the US automarket may soon reverberate around the world.

Another factor is BMW isn't going to allocate many 1ers for the US market because their margin on 1ers sold here isn't as good as other countries due to disadvantageous exchange ratio. That is one of the main reasons the '09 prices went up. They sell well here, BMW just doesn't make as much money per vehicle here as the do in other markets.

Car sales are down across the board rigth now with people trying to conserve cash. If anything I would expect a production INCREASE for the 1 Series because people will still want a BMW but spending a little less cash will make it more attractive. It's also getting a little better gas mileage than the 3. I wouldn't be surprised to see the diesel option in the US in the near future.

The 1er is set to continue for a long time yet!
Sales are strong in the UK and Europe, not as good as say the VW Golf or Audi A3, but still good. The new X1 is launched in the next 12-18 months, and I am sure that there will be a new 1er hatch within the next 3 years. There are lots of models now, and I expect you US guys to get the diesel models in time.

We have? 3 series compact, sure. But that's not "a lot". Which other models have we seen "go"?
