Tail light assembly TSB
Took my 2009 135 in for my second failed tail light assembly. They called me a couple of hours later to tell me that they are replacing the working one as well. Apparently there is a new service bulletin to replace all tail light assemblies with a newly engineered one. They also replaced my cracked third brake light...
Has this been a reoccurring issue with others? I'd heard about the third break light, but thought I was the unlucky one with the other tail lights! In other news, they gave me a 128 as a loner. I've only gotten 328's up to this point, so it was a pleasant surprise. I was pretty amazed with how peppy the car is even being an auto! |

Looks like I'm not the first to report on this after all! This was hiding in a regional forum after I did some digging.

Here's some info from SIB630310 for the tail lights,
SITUATION The LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) in the left or right rear lamp are inoperative. No check control message is displayed. CAUSE Corrosion of an internal connection within the tail lamp CORRECTION Replace both rear lamps (left and right), even if only one side is inoperative. Refer to Repair Instruction REP 63 21 180. Here in NL and Germany we have a recall for the tail light seals. Mine's at the dealer today for some roof issues and the 3rd brake light and they also told me they will replace the seals for the tail lights and maybe the tail lights as well. The tail lights and 3rd brake light are easy to replace so those issues don't bother me that much.

Funny, I brought my car in for a tail light on Saturday -- 2008 135i. Got home to find a bubble in my tire -- which they deny doing. Might be hard to do that in a parking lot, but the Freehold, NJ facility has a few in there.
Nonetheless, my tail light went out, and the sensor did not come on. Could it be this issue? |

There's a new SIB out for the tail lights. It's a service action for E82 and E88 produced between August 20, 2007 and October 12, 2009.
The seals on the rear lamps emit a gas that causes damage to the electrical connectors on the LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) inside the rear lamp. In some cases, the LEDs become inoperative. Action is to replace the seals or lamps on both sides of the car. If one of the lamps fails, both need to be replaced. If both lamps work fine, only the seals need to be replaced.

So even if you haven't had any issues with the lights, you can bring it in and request that the seals be replaced?

Yup, if your car is produced between the dates mentioned you'll get new seals for the tail lights. But your dealer should tell you about this when you take your car in for service.

Thanks for the info! Have been getting long cranks more and more frequently, so it's something else to ask about...

I went in for service today and they told me about this. So, my seals will be replaced. They didn't have the seals in stock, so my car is staying overnight waiting for them

awaiting a call back from the dealership.

Y'know, my tail lights have never given me any problems. Took it in for a free qt of oil (was low), and they wanted to keep it and do the tail lights. I thought well, if there's a recall I might as well...
...but now I'm scared, "If it's not broken, don't fix it" comes to mind. Now, I'm just worried that the replacement parts will fail.

My salesman told me while I was buying my car, "If it ever comes up with a low oil warning during [your warranty] period, just pull up and we'll put in a qt for you."
Maybe this varies by dealership? It shouldn't, but maybe it does? In any case, my dealership has honored this two times, once last year, and just today. They don't give me any problem about it, and the service people are nice and helpful each time. Back to the topic of the thread, anyone having any problems with their replacement rear lights?
