headlight cases not meant to be open?

I'm thinking about putting in OSRAM 5k D1S bulbs and maybe some 5000k PIAA h8 AE's but I have read a handful of posts that the headlight case is not meant to be opened and if you DO open it, you run the risk of condensation and worse, frying your lights? WTF this can't be serious? tell me this is just inexperienced people working on their cars that didn't close the cover right?

so ur telling me if one of my stock AE's go bad I'm running a 50/50 of problems just by detaching the covers for 15 mins? can't be right!

what posts say that? i've only seen that kind of posts when someone has halogen lights and want to literally take them apart (not just a cover) to retrofit HID projectors. That occurs when it's not sealed properly.

It can happen if you don't put the cover back on correctly. You will definitively get condensation in there that can mess things up if you don't put it on right. Trust me it's a pain in the ass. There's so little space to wiggle and maneuver the cover back on.

Exactly, 100% this. And getting it on is tougher than you think, not just the small amount of room to try it but also because it'll feel like it's on even if it isn't.

Also this really isn't a 135i engine question.

It is a little tough to get in there with limited space. Just be careful, take your time, and double check that you have it right before you close the hood and declare victory. You'll be good to go.

I had to completely disassemble my headlights to fix them a while back. The internal motor failed. I literally had to carefully cute the lenses off. I had to do one so I did both and modified the housings (color + small mods). Most people cant tell whats different on my car, but normally its just the headlights that throw them off.

It can be done. NOT for the faint at heart though.

The headlights are not only hard to open but the plastic is frail an can tear.

I think a project like this is best to give to OSS and other similar shops that have done a good dozen of these
