Lets go! - Alpine Screen in Nav Storage Tray
OK, so since day 1 I've said I will do this and now its about time!
I got my 1ner about 2 months ago and it had that stupid storage tray right in the middle of the dash - which I hated. Its soo deep and in my opinion is perfect for a screen, not for storage! After many hours of searching forums I came across this forum (which I then joined) as I saw gIzzE's post on his Pioneer in his car! Looked ace! I messaged him, he helped a ton and here I am now The plan - to replace the storage bin/tray with a screen that is mounted to the OEM BMW Sat Nav tray... pics to follow throughout updates Update 1: Before picture... (standard as it is now) |

Update 2:
Stage 1 of this was ordering the Sat Nav tray from BMW and then taking out that bloody storage box! Ordering was simple as my local dealer helped me out a ton, £37 for the tray and it came next day! Part no - 65 90 2 210 773 - but check with BMW first! Taking out the old tray was easy enough. This post explains it really well with pics (but do it in reverse!) http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=222753 Now I have the Nav Tray in and ready for my Screen... |

You have brass ones! Huge ones - to cut into your dashboard. Turned out GREAT though!

Update 3: The screen.
This actually took the longest to decide on. I wanted a screen that was thin, widescreen and that was also a GPS (and more)... I looked at TomToms and that lot, but they just lacked the style that I was looking for. After days/weeks of searching I gave in and went to my local car audio shop who recommended the following: Alpine TME-S370 (which is just a head unit screen) paired with the Alpine NVE-M300P (which gives it GPS capabilities). Note, this was stretching my budget a freaking ton! But I gave in, as usual... but damn I bet its gunna look nice. Hopefully fitting this Wednesday (13/June) - final pics to be posted |

As for now, I can just afford the upgrade to give it GPS and the basic functions - but iPod/phone and DVD extras can be added with additional connections/adaptor boxes. They even have options to wire in cameras to the car! I know this is a really expensive route im taking :/ |

My car came with the Storage Bin already installed (first pic). All I used it for was storing my glasses! But I don't need such a big wasted area up there... I've seen videos of people taking a saw to their dash! Crazy guys... haha |

Good work! I've always thought about making a custom mount in my car for a tablet of some sort. IE: Ipad. I'd simply have it tether to my phone every time I enter my car so it'll be able to play music - pandora, videos, text, use navigation etc. You can easily remove it when you're leaving your car and clip it back in when you need it.

Here we go:
Finished and finally all working! We had to take out the glove box and pretty much the whole center console to hardwire this all in. I have the GPS receiver hidden behind the passenger air vent (well near by). Sadly didn't get any pics of this - I wont take any credit for the install as my friends custom car audio shop sorted this for me... Let me know what you guys think! |

Looks really good man!
I would invest in a good tint job and use a windshield sunscreen when parked to minimize the chance of a thief spotting it. Again, looks really good! |

Looks brilliant, my only question is. Do you actually have to touch the screen? or do you have some kind of remote, ish to the idrivesystem? - Basicly so you dont have to reach to the screen to press for example AUX og NAV.

Looks good, however, you WILL have issues with the light coming in and blinding your screen. I would have the fabricate some type of shroud to help with that if it were me.

It's not too bad. Once you've got your route planned you don't really need to ever touch the screen. But yea, it's a bit of a reach... long arms are handy though
