Rusty Wheel Hubs?
I had the front wheels off of my car for a job yesterday and noticed that the wheel hubs have accumulated quite a bit of rust. The car is only about 6 months old with ~4500 miles on the odometer. Is this normal? Should I be concerned, or take any action? I'm mainly wondering if this will prevent a safety issue down the line. Would this be a valid warranty claim?
For what it's worth, I live on the coast less than 1/4 mile from the ocean, so that certainly doesn't help anything. |

Surface rust is expected and not an issue. Relax.

It's not a big deal at all. It's mostly just an annoyance. Each time I change my winters for summers and vice versa I have to wire brush the hubs. It takes about 10 seconds each but makes the new wheel so much easier to get on.
You can't fight mother nature.

Thanks guys for the info. My first hunch was that it wasn't a big deal but after Googling it I came across the threads that maxnix referenced in the 3er forums and began to wonder. Guess I'll just brush 'em one of these days.

I had the same question for my BMW salesman when i was buying a used 135i. Being there is not many 135i used CPO for sale they had a nice black with red coral interior i had a deposit on that had rusty hubs..it looked like shit on a rather pristine car.. I ended up backing out of the deal as i had black cars now for way to long and really wanted a change...He mentioned BMW hubs all rust..but it still looks like crap IMO..I would brush,, lightly sand and seal with a proper sealer if available. Luckily the Sedonna Red 135i i ended up buying had hubs that were not rusted. ATM my 135 is a weekend clear day/night car and has not been in the rain more than a couple times since i have had it so no rust yet...but when it happens i will keep it looking the best i can and not rusty...Looks to me is almost as important as the performance..To me there is no room for visable rust on this car wether it's normal or not...but i am a freakin detail nut so what can i say...

It can be a big deal because the last time i tried to pull off my wheels, they got stuck to the hubs and took 20 minutes of beating to break them free (and i sand paper the rust everytime i remove a wheel). Im seriously considering some anti-seize or similar.

Try to find some spray graphite after you sand and clean the rust off with some non-chlorinate brake parts cleaner. I will work wonders for you.

Exactly. Wire brush all the rusty areas and apply a light coat of anti-seize. Also you can lightly coat the brake rotor/wheel contact surface. I must stress you don't need much so just a very light coating.
Also, never put anti-seize on the lug bolts. If you have some corrosion just wire brush the bolts and if really bad run a tap thru the threads on the hub/axel. |

if you found a car that didn't have any rust there, i'm impressed.... I almost expect it fresh off the factory floor with the rust in that area....
it's as normal as the sun rise. if you don't like it, paint (would probably recommend high heat paint), anti-seize, a little grease. you choose. |
