Should I cancel the extended warranty?
Bought my 08 135i about 6 weeks ago and currently has 20K miles on it. The dealer talked me into getting the BMW Extended vehicle protection Gold for $3100. After owning the car, hearing the reliability of the car etc I'm thinking that I might be better off canceling it and just saving the money in case something does brake. I plan on doing most maintenance myself and the car will have bolt ons. I still have the factory warranty for another 5 months.

I wouldn't, because if that HPFP goes out you'll be screwed.

Didn't BMW extend the coverage for the HPFP? That should be good for a while after the regular coverage expires.
As for the extended warranty, cancel it, and purchase it on the group buy currently going on here. (Search the site.)

Since most dealerships don't care about modifications are they still the same people that validate if work will be done through the extended warranty? I know some other extended warranty's send a rep out to validate certain warranty work to ensure there are no mods and it wasn't abuse that cause the problem. I know in the manual it does state in the BMW extended warranty no modifications.
Also I'm thinking about chancing it since most of these known problems are either under warranty longer or I can do myself. I work from home so I don't really drive the car that much and if I have to have another vehicle I just borrow my GF's. |

I had purchased extended maintenance on my previous Z-4. I traded the car in prior to the maintenance even starting and thought I would get the 2k back. WRONG, the new owner gets to enjoy the 2 years extended maintenance, since I found out it was non refundable. Hopefully the plan you bought can be cancelled.

I did the same thing when I bought my '08. I'm just gonna leave it and not certain if I can cancel. I also can do a lot of maintenance myself so I probably should have saved the money. So, if you feel comfortable with cancelling the warranty then I would say go ahead.
One major concern would be the turbos although your miles are really low. I think they are $700 a piece and labor will be expensive. FYI ...the HPFP is covered under a separate warranty (10 yrs or 100K miles) and the free maintenance is not part of the warranty (which I think you already know). GL

Also, if you're planning on modding you're just increasing the chances that you will personally void that $2K you spent on the warranty. The purchase of the extended warranty is already a gamble, of which is only further compounded by any aftermarket modifying.
I think if you are modding, you are better off just saving the money. |

Dealership doesn't care about my catback exhaust, intake, wheels, coilovers, M3 parts, or cosmetic mods. I think they would care about a chip, downpipes, FMIC (maybe, but probably not), any real aftermarket piping (charge pipe, BOV, etc), throttle body spacer, etc. Remember, by law they have to prove that if you suffer some sort of failure, your mods caused it, otherwise it's their duty to warranty your stuff. Hard to prove that an axleback caused your engine to blow up, but much easier to show that a chip caused unnecessary strain on it..

Oh no, here we go again.
The dealer cannot void your warranty unless they can prove the mod caused the failure. So, feel free to mod....see the 'stickey' regarding modding and warranty.

Well, the problem is that they CAN do just that. Then, it's up to you to fight it, and good luck with that.

with 2k+ posts I would expect you to know what you're talking about, but you don't. BMW extended all HPFP warranties until 10 years/120k miles. additionally how would just the fuel pump going bad be a main reason to keep a $3,000 warranty? That's a $400 job at most...
