Rear Lights Recall

Hi Guys

Just got a call from BMW recalling my car to change the rear light or rear light seals.

Heads up for you guys incase you haven't got a call yet. Looks like they might have found and fix the problem for the rear lights?

My car is in the service dept today,my rear LEDs went a month or so ago,got in quite quick as they had some lights there, but the new lights would not work, they said some module was causing the problem so they ordered one and its getting fitted now, they reckon this will fix it will see later today.

OT-got a 2010 323 loan car,geez i love my 1er

Hey Sparoz thanks for the heads-up.

Havent got any call yet from BMW. What is it all about exactly...is it the rear taillight LED problem or the bootlid light cracking one?

A friend of mine bought a new 125 vert two weeks ago. She took it in after a couple of days to have a minor issue corrected and was told about the BMW recall on rear lights.

I am pretty sure it's the LED rear lights, and mine has already been changed and fixed last time, but they are recalling my car to have it replaced again. I was told that they are not recalling all cars, and they either need to replace the module or replace the seal.

Ah I see it is not a blanket recall. I had my left light replaced over a year ago.

Interesting. I'm in for my first service on Monday, will see what happens and report back. I've had one of my rear lights replaced earlier this year.

I was in at Brisbane BMW early last week. Could see several 1er coupes in the service area with their rear lights removed. Mentioned it to the service manager and he confirmed it was a big issue. I had both mine replaced a few weeks ago after one failed.

They have kept my car over-night,they said they ran out of time to programme the new module,it was in for a service and i got them to fit some cool carbon brake pads,so might have been alot to do in a day.

The right rear LED just went on my 135i ... apparently parts aren't in stock so a replacement (for both lights) is coming ex-germany.

SUBJECT
Service Action: Replace Rear Lamps, or Replace Rear Lamp Seals

MODEL
E82, E88 (1 Series) up to October 12, 2009

SITUATION
The seals on the rear lamps emit a gas that causes damage to the electrical connectors on the LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) inside the rear lamp. In some cases, the LEDs become inoperative.

CAUSE
Unsuitable seal material

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves E82 and E88 (1 Series) vehicles which were produced from August 20, 2007 to October 12, 2009.

In order to determine whether a specific vehicle has had this Service Action completed or is affected by this Service Action, first check the B-pillar label for code number 564. If code number 564 has been punched out, the campaign has already been performed. If code number 564 has not been punched out, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

CORRECTION
Inspect both rear lamps and, depending on the result, replace the seals or the lamps on both sides of the vehicle.

PROCEDURE
Turn on the vehicle exterior lighting and check if the tail lights in both rear lamps are functioning correctly.

If both tail lights are working, replace the seals on both rear lamps (a total of 4 seals). Before installing the new seals, fully remove the original seals and be sure that residue does not fall into the rear light. Refer to Repair Instruction REP 63 21 101 "Replace sealing frame for rear light on the left or right".

No further work is necessary.

If one or both tail lights are inoperative, replace both of the rear lamps (always replace both, even if only one tail light has failed). Refer to Repair Instruction REP 63 21 180 "Remove and refit/replace the rear light on the left or right".

Dispose of the removed lamps in such a way so as to prevent reuse.

Now my 125i has been recalled now - interesting they don't use the word recall, but 'campaign'.

Kinda like the Japanese term "advance to the rear" in WWII!

My seals are fucked. Noticed some waste and water around the edges of my light structure last night. Will take the car in ASAP to get fixed.
