I believe there is property tax on cars in RI and depending on where you live it isn't cheap. Good news is they valued my 04 R32 at $4300.

It should be nearly the same as you paid in 2008, considering it's based on 90% of sticker during model year and 50% of sticker during model year+1.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Excise tax is ridiculous. I can't figure out what they actually do with this money. We already paid sales tax when we bought the car, what is the excise tax for? In NY, where I am from, we didn't have anything like it. Even worse, it doesn't seem to be tax deductable (unless you itemize).

I think it's a use tax that pays for roads and stuff - probably politically easier (since it's a progressive tax in this case) to have in an excise tax than to roll it in to gas taxes, which would be a better indication of actual road use.

Oh well..

bumping this thread since I just got my 2013 excise bill. Somehow they've valued my my 2008 135i at $3500, so my excise is only like 87 dollars. Just wondering if I've lucked out, or they just have no idea how to value our cars.

Not sure if this means much but I just registered my '08 and they valued it with NADA at ~20k... that was a fun $1,100 check to write. ( I know this isnt the excise tax but just for value purposes from this silly state)

Excise tax is based on a rapidly depreciating book value, so that's typical.

In contrast, NH has a town "registration fee" which is much worse than excise tax after the car's 1st year, because it goes down linearly by 0.3%/yr. So I paid a $500 town fee on my 2 year old car. NH gets you every which way, they just don't call it a tax.

Did you have a 2012 jan-apr excise tax on a different car(traded in or sold for new car?)

You only paid a prorated excise tax in 2012 because I assume you purchased the car that year. It probably would have been ~$700 if you bought the car in Jan 2012. The 2013 amount assumes you will own it the whole year. If you sell mid-year, then I think you can claim reimbursement for part of the amount.

Also, it's nice that the tax will decrease fast year-by-year. The excise tax for my 2007 335i was less than $100 if I remember correctly. So they base it on a fast depreciation schedule, not the actual value of the car.
