BMW 128i Fuel smell

Hello, hoping for help diagnosing an issue.

I have a 2010 BMW 128i and when I fill up the gas tank full I smell gasoline coming from the back rear driver’s side. When I don’t fill up fully, the smell is not noticeable or barely noticeable. I don’t smell gas inside the car but it seems to be coming from the outside.

I had got an engine light with error code P0456 small evap leak 2A16. I cleared the error code and it has not come back after driving about 100km.

Brought it to the mechanic #1 and he thought it was the fuel pump. I replaced the O rings of the left and right fuel pump instead of the the entire fuel pump system. The gasoline smell is still there.

Brought it to mechanic #2 who thought it was potentially the charcoal canister or that the O ring was not tightened properly.

If it is the fuel pump, is it worth replacing the whole unit or just the O ring? Thank you!

Any input would be appreciated. Thank you!

Did you check for cracks on top of the fuel pump regulator? Mine had a crack behind on the driver side. Replaced mine about 2 yrs ago. No more leaks.

Had the same experience. Changed O ring, no difference. Changed fuel pump and it was fixed. It was cracked.

Oh Ok so yours was the passenger side that was cracked you had to replace? That’s where the fuel pump is isn’t? Mine was the driver side which is the fuel pump regulator.

Probably not but I got tired of going back and forth with iterative fixes. One side was definitely cracked badly enough.

I did both also. If you do the fix, make sure your tank is pretty much empty and well ventilated.
