Well, it's because a few of us here have owned both 135s and E9x M3s....I think that qualifies us to post here.
I had one of the first 135s back in 2008 and only moved out of it for the convenience of four doors. Fair enough?

I think it's cute the M3 guys hang with us plebs
There was an M3 sedan at BBMW this afternoon when I dropped in, it looked beautiful. Plates were Q ZR 22 Z if I recall correctly. I like Beemer's idea of the 1M being a hard core track nut and the M3 a bit more "GT", if that makes sense. Don't word-peck me on that, I'm trying to convey an idea after a couple of glasses of a very tasty pinot grigio. |

I personally think the M3 owner add a great perspective to this place. Also the guys who post here are far from the douchiness that are normally associated with M3s.
I personally am loving the idea of the M1, the next car is hopefully going to be a toss between this, Cayman and used M3. |

I think I have said it in another thread before, but I wouldn't go to another forum for other cars (which are lower in the food chain) and boast about how good my car is or how much I love it. I think it's quite rude... |

Lol some interesting discussion going on in this thread.
I personally would pick the 135i and the 1M over the current M3 mainly due to the price point. I wasn't in a position to to purchase a new M3 anyway but I couldn't justify spending that much on a car when there was a 135i for half it's price and almost nearly as good in some areas. The M3 is a complete package though. I also had to factor in that the 135i was a very nice upgrade from my E46 3 series anyway. Maybe if I was coming from an M5 or M6 I would have had a different opinion and the 135i wouldn't have cut it. I'm confident the 1M will eliminate most of the differences and close the gap between the 135i and the M3 in the performance and looks department. The last few days I've been giving it a lot of thought and I'm leaning towards keeping my 135i. The reality is there is nothing wrong my with 135i, I love it and if I modify it after my warranty expires I'm confident I'll have close to the performance of a stock 1M anyway. What's even funnier is that in the last 2 weeks I've had 2 guys ask me if my car was a M1 because they saw my CSL wheels and carbon add-ons My personal opinion is that the 1M will out perform the M3, maybe not destroy it, but be on par with it and out perform it in some areas. It will be the sensible choice and much better value if you were on the market for a new M car today. This is of course until the next gen M3 comes out |

For some odd reason the M3 is well overpriced in Australia. The price difference between the 135i and the M3 and indeed the 335i is huge. But the performance doesnt match that premium imo.
Does a V8 engine in a 3-series body plus various suspension upgrades, aero bits and development really justify the extra $$$? Obviously in the USA they dont think so.... |

Based on the US prices I can justify the extra dollars spent to upgrade to a higher model. The extra money I forked out on my fully loaded 1er could have been the difference between getting a stock 135i vs a stock M3 in the USA. That's why the opinions in the USA are completely different to what we have here due to the discrepancies in price. I doubt many people would pay double the price of a 135i to own an M3 over there. |

Before we scare off the M3 owners who post here (amk; zender, swift, anthony etc), I believe their attitude and input has for the most part been first rate and welcome. I think 99% of us acknowledge that if the M3 and (non M) 1er were the same price, we'd rather have the M3. That doesn't stop us liking what we've got. When the M1 or whatever it's going to be called is released that attitude may change.
Stay on board and keep on posting guys! |
