135 to replace my M2 performance question
Hello group
My daily driver is a work truck and I had a 2017 M2 as a weekend car to have some fun. It just sat in my driveway most of the time and wasn’t very practical so I sold it. Was thinking of buying a 135 to replace it and was wondering what modifications I would need to do to it to make it as quick or quicker then a M2? I’m not going to track the car so I like more acceleration type performance. Should I go with the earlier twin turbo car as they can be cheaper and easier to tune? Thanks in advance. |

It shouldn't take much. The typical "Stage 2" build should put you faster in a straight line than a stock M2.
-Charge Pipe -Better intake (filter is fine) -Intercooler -Downpipe -Tune

I'm trying to figure out how, if the M2 wasn't practical, a 135i with modifications to make it like the M2 is a good idea? Won't you have a car that has all the same impracticalities, whatever those were?

Impractical as in having a 58k car sitting as opposed to a 10-13k car sitting for occasional use.

Are you thinking N54 or N55 for the 1er?

N54 all day for performance. DP/FMIC/CP. Be sure to do inlets, I recommend the PR version. Get yourself a Stg2 lpfp. Reputable tune of choice to crank boost and enjoy ~400whp on 93 or 450+ on E mixes.
Regardless of not wanting to track, you'll need to do some work on the suspension to put the power down, but proper wheels, tires, dampers, RSFB, diff will fix a huge chunk of it. Feel free to hit me up if you have specific questions.

If you really want MAX acceleration, N54 single turbo is the way to go. I have a n55 with Pure Stage 1 turbo and it's perfect for me. Still runs like stock with extra oomph, but pulls all the way to redline instead.

Completely disagree on single turbo conversions. Stick with the provided architecture. N54 is best with twins, N55 is best with single. Some pretty cool ST N55 builds out there. Best is relative of course.

To each their own. I don't have any experience with n54, so my opion doesn't really matter.

But the N54 undoubtedly makes more power on a single.
But really, a Pure Stage 2 N55 makes as much usable power as this chassis can handle from a street-ability perspective. N54 if you want to make insane power, N55 for pretty much everything else.

That's a great option too. I don't think the OP was looking to do more than basic bolt-ons though.

N54 is overrated. N55 has more reliable fueling and wastegate and doesn't build up intake deposits to the point where there is an issue. Both motors need stock turbo(s) swapped for "serious" power. Both motors can make gigantic power limited by fueling and tune with upgraded turbo(s).
N55 also comes with dual clutch which is good for hard driving with corners. |

I’m really just looking for something to drive on the weekends around town and have some serious acceleration. Sub 4 second 0-60 will be fine. Can I achieve that without changing all the suspension and turbos.

Do you have E85 available? Any 135i with an E30 tune is probably what you're looking for.

Also I would throw some lowering springs on just to make the increased power more useable. After I did my tune with everything else, it power the power down but not effectively. Once I did the bilstein and everything else I wanted to do, it’s way more useable and stable with no tire slippage at all

Yeah cuz a stock turbos N54 is so fast. Not by 2019 standards. The power difference between the two on stock snail(s) is marginal enough it shouldn't be a buying criterion and both cars need bigger turbo(s) to get anywhere interesting. Oh wait I already said that.
Why are you more worried about N55 long term? |
