Mine doesn’t show up on a vin search, but I do have one open for blower motor… maybe it’ll take a bit to trickle all vins in?

Does this recall fix - replacing the VANOS bolts - require removal of the valve cover? Mine is in the recall and I was planning to do the valve cover gasket (and, probably, a new valve cover) within the next year (i.e., Spring/Summer).

Yes it requires the VC to come off. If you get the recall performed and have had no issues, BMW will supply the new bolts and VC gasket. If any of the Vanos gears have had the bolts break or work loose those get replaced too. There is a pdf somewhere here that explains what parts are getting replaced in relation to various stages of failure/damage.

if anyone is looking for the pdf try searching for Service Bulletin SI B11 07 14 and Repair Instruction 11 36 046. Both stemming from the original Recall Campaign 14V-176.

Confirming yes - I would also advocate for replacing the valve cover due to age. In addition to the plastic material degrading due to heat and time, the cover includes an integrated PCV that will fail at some point.

I addressed a leaking VCG a few years ago only to have to redo the job last year and replace the entire cover due to a failed PCV

I believe this is the link, if folks don't want to search:

I think that's a different recall. That recall is for the VANOS gear bolts. The new recall is for the VANOS housing bolts.

Interesting. That changes things for those of us content to ignore this since we are thinking we already had this done. Hmm.

Whoops. You are definitely correct. My mistake. Sorry for the bad info.

No problem. I can see the possible confusion.

Actually, I sorta hoped it would be the VANOS gear bolts... It would've saved me the trouble of replacing the valve cover gasket myself.

UH, no. This is an expansion of the recall for the same issue - the crappy security head aluminum bolts that hold the VANOS adjusters on. My 2011 e91 was not covered by the original recall, but is covered now. My 2011 e88 was covered under the original recall and has the door sill sticker to prove it was done.

Exact same bolts and procedures in both recalls. Why BMW excluded certain cars with identical engines that came down the same assembly line is a mystery for the ages.

Like you, I replaced these bolts myself earlier this year - any word on what the dealer says regarding reimbursement?

I just received a notification from my dealer that my 2011 128i is subject to the recall but I really don't want them to do anything now since the bolt replacement has recently been done - is there a way to register the repair as complete with BMW and avoid those pesky recall reminders?

my dealer isn't ready for the recall yet so I haven't had the chance to discuss with them. they referred me to their warranty line (800) 525-7417 which I haven't called yet.

I'd imagine you will need to bring your car in for BMW to review / certify that work has been completed.

Does this effect all n52s during the interval or not? I have a 2011 and checked NHTSA and it only lists the pvc. Also, the recall says 155k affected and also 1% affected which makes no sense unless they mean 1% of all BMW during that period.

Soo, should I be on the list or is it really just some n52?

FWIW; I have a 2011 with n51 and am part of the recall.
