Sandown Raceway: 135i vs 1M vs E92 M3 vs E46 M3
BMW was over-represented at Sandown (3104m, 13 turns, two straights 899+910m) on Saturday 7th January, and I feel that aside from driver technique and cornering, there is not a significant power advantage that allows one vehicle to simply out-run another.
I guess we are are all on the same team! |

I don't get it, are you saying all those cars returned the same lap time?

Ahh... I see.. this is like Schrödinger's cat... None of them have actually posted a time until they are observed.
Up to that point they have all both won and lost simultaneously... |

If it were like Schrödinger's cat they would all be dead!

I'd say the majority of the BMW's ran in the 1.31 -1.35 minute window.
The exception being a M3 Pure addition with R spec tyres and Brembo's doing low 1.20's |

Well my take is that - excluding discrepancies in skill or risk-taking behaviour - it seems unlikely that any one of these vehicles will have an opportunity to pass another down the straight, or conversely that any one of these vehicles can defend a position along 900m straight. An unexpected surprise, but we did have the opportunity to directly compete against one another

So.... in other words, when none of them are driven to the limits they are as quick as each other...

I think you will find that it can go MUCH quicker than that. One of my first laps ever in my bone stock 135i (run flats and all) was in the 1:29's. I think Taka has the video somewhere. With all the mods, from memory, my 135i can do Sandown in the 1:24's.

Sarah, I have found DD track days to be enjoyable with the more conservative demographic, but it was a rare privilege to have run with the other marquee M models
Thanks WAY for providing an impressive benchmark, and something worthy to aim for in future. If you (or Steve) were driving all four vehicles simultaneously, we could conduct a scientific experiment (outside of the pathology lab) to conclude an endless debate! |

Way, I don't think you would have been doing those times. Look at the times from the BMW Club of VIC Sandown day (see attached). Not even the M3 E92 were doing those times. Not even Peter Fitzgerald a professional race driver who has one of the fastest 135i around was doing those times. BMWCCV Round 4 - Sandown results 2011-07-10.pdf

Thanks DTNJNQ for the information.
We have reviewed results from Sandown for various Victorian automobile clubs including BMW, Audi, and WRX for the last three years. However, this post was never about absolute lap times as much as others may attempt to derive an ego boost. In any event, it is not possible to fully interpret times due to unknown technical and environmental factors. None of us proclaim to be hardcore racers, but there may be others who have had the opportunity to witness such comparable vehicles in action (preferably legally and without incident), and their experiences are equally valid! |
