Well legally, if you have the sport package then no. If you're running just for fun locally, I wouldn't worry about it as a more narrow wheel in the rear is a sacrifice for a RWD not a gain.

Personally, I'd rather deal with the stagger than be equipped with the softer sprung non-M Sport package 128i, so you're one step ahead already.

I wrote a review recently on NorthAmericanMotoring:

I've been running on both all year(on S2000s) and have lots of experience with Z1s too.
Both are very close time-wise but get there differently.

Dunlops turn in better(no tire except the AD08 feels as sharp as the Z1 or Z2) but have a narrower slip angle at the limit. They are the stronger tire when transitioning and take the least amount of time to 'take a set'. They also seem to have a wider happy window for temperature.

The Rivals are easier to modulate and catch at the limit. They need a little longer to take a set but at the same time allow you to be a more aggressive when powering out of elements.

Rivals are optimal when running a slight stretch(much like the R1R and RS3) so stick to running at least 10mm narrower than what you'd normally run with a Dunlop.

We've also noticed that Rivals plateau quick if you don't manage the core temperatures with spraying. With ambient temperatures over 60°F and two drivers, it is mandatory to start spraying after first runs.

Both are very strong, and I prefer the Dunlop Z2s. For me, they require less work to be fast, assuming you are smooth with your inputs. It's also hard not to be spoiled by their responsiveness.

Hope this helps.

thanks for the review, I'll probably go with the z2s.

Will these be on spare wheels or will you use them as your DDs?
I have found they are quite noisy at freeway speeds.
I also purchased the Turner E93 M3 front sway bar, I am waiting for it to be delivered. I hope it reduces some of the front tire sidewall wear.

I didn't know they were that noisy thanks for the heads up! i'm thinking of a dedicated autocross/track set of wheels/tires. And now I'm also thinking STX is the way to go, not for the competitive aspect, but because i want to reduce the understeer, modify the suspension. Street Touring seems to allow a decent amout of mods without going crazy.

Thanks to Xaeryan for the classing link in the signature line, that saves a lot time!

No prob. One thing I keep forgetting to fix I will mention since it affects you: STX tire width is limited to 265.
