Like many others here, I too was an early order and it didnt materialise. I also began a big search for an available unit but I lost faith. Here is my plan B, I picked it up today, ironically, the dealer with whom I placed my order for the 1M mailed me last night to say that unfortunately production has ended and they could not get there hands on one for me.

2008 M5 Manual
Without getting into detail of the deliberations, I was anxious to make this leap, I am well aware of the potential expensive maintenance of the M5 and a few catastrophic engine failures discussed on M5Board. It is a far cry from a 1M, but not so much from my 545i I was getting out of. M5s are not seen driving around that often and then the fact that this is a manual, not just rare in the US, but unavailable elsewhere in the world. The penny dropped and I bought it. If you haven't been in an E60 M5, you must try it, the offbeat thrum from the 2 inline 5s strapped together is hyptnotic! I am a happy camper, I sat in it in the garage tonight with a glass of wine and just savoured the moment of sitting in my first M car.

I hope to meet some of the forum members next weekend. I had made reservations for Oktoberfest (would be my first) back in Feb when I thought I would have a 1M there, so I decided to fly down for the weekend anyway to see what the fun is all about and look forward to 2012 when it will be up here on my doorstep.

Unless you are a club racer, most of us will be gone on Saturday morning as O'fest officially ends on Friday evening at the dinner. My 1M will not be here until we get home.

Congratulations! I love your new car and if I were to have an M5 myself, a 6-speed transmission would be mandatory. Enjoy!

The true spiritual successor to the 1M?

When Clarkson likened the 1M to the original Golf Gti he was making a point about heritage and inspiration, a natural evolution of cars that involved their driver and brought a smile to your face. However, he didn’t go back quite far enough, let’s not forget what spawned the Gti, it was the humble but inspired Talbot Lotus Sunbeam, the last rear wheel drive car to win the RAC Rally outright (1981).

Here are my two beauties, the Sunbeam Lotus is track prepared, producing 210 bhp through the rear wheels, weighing-in at a paltry 940kg.
