Vacuum oil from N52 motor?

Is there any way to suck all the oil out of an N52 motor from under the hood? Like maybe through the oil filter cavity? Is the crankcase plug the only way to drain it?

Stop being lazy and do it like everyone else does it. Don't mean to be harsh but it is what it is.

I'm 67 years old and arthritic so if I can save myself some pain I do it. Even if I wasn't old and infirm it's a smarter/more efficient way to get the same results. I've crawled under cars more times than you've touched different cars in your lifetime so put your answer where the sun don't shine

Well other than what u stated there is no better way to go about it. You will never get all the oil out unless its drained from the oil pan.

Only way is to use the oil pan drain. I used a vacuum suction pump on my last car - its a great easy way to change one's oil. But not on a new BMW without a dip stick. I have tried sucking the oil out of the oil filter housing... it only holds about 300ml of oil. IF you try and stick a suction tube down inside of it... you won't go more than an inch or two in there. So... you can only use the oil pan drain.

I appreciate the response, you saved me some time. This car might be a candidate for a Fumoto drain valve. I see where people have installed them on the N54 engine has anyone put one on an N52?

I believe JimD has. But I do not think he has posted a pic of the valve installed on his 128i.

See post #30...

You can also see my oil changing pics in that thread. Even though I have a 135i... at that time no one had made a 135i DIY oil change thread... so I stuck my pics in Jim's wonderful thread.

I know the 128i has an 8mm Hex or Allen plug for the oil pan drain. On most 128i's this drain plug points straight down. I believe in the last year BWM has changed the oil drain plug to the side of the oil pan, much like the 135i's use/have. So maybe you can confirm or deny this for us.

It's in a recess that points down at an angle. I doubt I can even mount the valve there without an extension and then it would extend beyond the cover.

why doesnt someone design a drain plug that can attach to one of those motive extractors? Something that could lead a tube into engine bay somewhere to attach to the extractor. This would be awesome.

Topside draining is something to be avoided either way. Very poor at removing the particulate matter that sinks to the bottom of an oil pan when the engine isn't in use.

I have a Fumitomo valve on my "other" car, a Suzuki Grand Vitara. The drain plug is horizontal and the valve saves messy oil changes. My wife's 128i is a 2013 and the drain plug is at an angle, unlike my 2009. I thought it was the automatic that changed things but I guess maybe it is the year. I wouldn't put a fumitomo valve on her car or a n54 because it will be too low. There also may not be space enough to thread the valve into position (which can be fixed with an adapter but would put the valve even closer to the pavement). The valve works fine but I don't like the idea of the drian plug potentially hitting something and getting knocked off. On my zuk, there is no change in the ground clearance and no problem. With a vertical or angled drain plug, I don't like the extra length and thus decreased clearance. If that is not a concern to you, my valve has be on over 5 years and gets used every 5000 miles without issue. It's really nice to just stick my hand up there and move the lever 1/4 turn and have the oil come outthe tube into the pan. The filter on the zuk on the other hand.....

I will never figure out why the Japanese like to play "hide the oil filter".
