Tire Carrying Roof Rack (With pics. Concept, not Step-by-step)
This will make for a very lame, very brief DIY article, but here it is anyway:
The Home Depot MacGyver Tire Holding Roof Rack™* * It probably holds other stuff well too, like surf boards and kayaks.
Cost: Thule makes a rack similar to this that is large enough to hold all the tires. It's like $480 or something ridiculous. Yakima makes one too, and though it's less expensive, it's a bit too small for 4 18" wheels and still costs like $350ish. The Home Depot MacGyver Tire Holding Roof Rack™ will cost you about $70-$80, which includes the tools and the straps that hold down the tires. Items to purchase:

I'm not sure what the BMW base rack's weight limit it, I'll look. You'd think it would be over 170lbs though, right?

its 150lbs max but the way you have it will spread the weight out pretty evenly so I don't think you'll have any problems.

Ah okay. Maybe I'll put one tire in the trunk next time, if I have the room. Still, I was pretty happy with how it turned out.

yeah I'm sure you'd be ok. I think you'll be fine with it the way it is anyway. The load isn't centralized in any one spot so its not like its putting pressure on one specific area.

That totally looks like it might even improve your gas mileage too.
I used to load my Mini Cooper S onto my Trailblazers roof rack all the time, it was fine. OK seriously now, That is a lot of weight to add to the top of the car. You can make the car very unstable. I would suggest the track day trailer option instead. Also how did you get 35lbs/tire??? I've never seen a wheel lighter than ~18lb (for 18") and a tire less than 21lb (for a 135i racing size >245) Thats 49lb/corner at ~160lbs +rack. You are probably close to 200lbs and that is dangerous. I don't want to be a jerk, but it is probably worth the extra money to protect your safety and the car from damage. |

It is a great idea, but I still wouldn't put the 4th tire just for safety. When you are going over a curb, highway bridge joint or anything in that matter will create extra stress on the mount points.
I am pretty sure BMW rated 150 lbs and there probably is another 50 lbs of safety net but you are over what's recommended and very close to the limit. Enjoy your rack, it is an awesome idea, and ton of space saver. just get one tire in to be perfectly safe.
