Now, the $64,000 question is... what were the IL results for the E92 M3?

that overboost is sweet. you can tell its on from 2k-4.5k. must feel pretty good.

btw this dyno is one of the higher reading dynos. everycar that dynos hear seems to get higher than normal numbers. the delta vs the 135 tho is nice.

BMW seriously underrated this car; the hint given by the M engineer from WLKSFTLY's ED thread was true

Looking at the dyno plot, it looks like there's no point revving it beyond 5200 RPM. Incidentally, in the 1M manual, they recommend that you not rev the engine beyond 5500 RPM during the break-in period, which essentially means that you can use all available HP/TQ from the get-go

Also from WLKSFTLY's ED thread, you can see the tachometer hovering around 5200 RPM while the car is nearing its terminal velocity (assuming he was in 6th gear, which I also assume is not an O/D gear), which makes sense, because that's when the engine is making its max power.

I didn't think they dyno'd it.
But a little more googling showed me this:

insideline 2009 BMW M3
379 hp @ 8000rpm
274 lbft-tq @ 3900rpm

so a difference of 45hp in favor of the M3 on the dyno
and a difference of 88hp in favor of the 1M on the dyno

I know I should take manufacturer claims with a huge grain of salt... but it seems like adding an intake, downpipes, and exhaust should close that hp gap. Before even fiddling with boost.

The 73hp lead that M3 guys keep reminding us about all the sudden becomes less and less valid an argument...

This is only from memory, but doesn't it also tell you not to use full throttle? If so, it'll be hard to get full power and torque out of it ;-)

The dyno they use also read about 380whp for an E90 M3. Very genrous compared to most.

That's ok. I'll keep my high-revving V8, thank you very much . Sounds far better than the fart can.

In all seriousness though, those are impressive numbers. It's very much in line with how //M tends to under-rate their products. I am disappointed with how early the torque comes in, however. Part of the "fun" of my car is the skill and knowledge that comes with learning when to pick which gear, and wringing out the engine all the way to the limiter. To me, that was the allure of the recent generation of //M cars - with that gone, I now know for certain that I won't be returning to BMW for my next car.

Cheers

Most interesting line in that document to me was "In fact, contrary to what you've heard recently, we've got it on good authority that the next M3 is getting a hotted-up version of the N55..."

Well.. maybe not 7K... at least not without a tune.... but it is worth hanging in to 6500.... the graph may show a peak of 331 hp at 5100... but there is still 300 hp available at 6500 rpm... So it's not like you need to shift at 5500 or anything like that....

Also note that it has been discovered that the car makes a lot of power with a tune... The factory software has the top end very rich, to protect the life of catalytic converter and exhaust emissions components... An aftermarket tune has already been shown to unlock power up to nearly 7K

I think most (if not all) cars are underrated these days. Remember they have "certified" power ratings now, but they are most likely certified under worse-case-scenario conditions (like 100-degree ambient air temps).

I dunno the specifics but the article in the OP seems to indicate the same thing, like using high intercooler temps for the certification.

Basically the rated HP is sort of a guaranteed minimum for the majority of driving conditions, meaning you'll get a lot better than that if you live somewhere where you can't regularly fry eggs on your driveway.

Seriously? If you rev to 5000 and shift, you end up at 4000 at best. You rev to 7000 or near and you fall back to the peak torque output.

How do you drive a car with this kinda torque band? If you shift at redline, you'll be at falling torque band where the power is constant-ish.. So what's the right rev to shift up?

from the perspective of someone who can't afford this car during its for sale period, I am quite green with envy to anyone's avatar that below it says 1M or future 1M.

May these cars someday soon be up for grabs pre-owned, though not likely...
