No front license plates?
What's the best way to ensure my 325 (currently in production) does not have front license plates? Is this something they do at the dealer prep level or is it pre-drilled?
I don't want the drill holes, either. This is for the US model. Thanks. |

The front license plate is a state requirement in SOME states, isn't that correct?

Plate law
You do have to have a front plate in IL, however, I get about 1 ticket per year on it. Most cops won't stop you because they don't care. And if you park in a garage then you're probably ok. Parking on the street means you'll get tickets. One of the al-time dumbest laws known to man. Call me vane but I just can't ruin the front of a great car with a license plate. I say take your chances if you park in a garage over-night. If you're getting your car, you can always have the dealer do nothing and come back later to get it drilled.
Good luck! m |

I wonder if they can use that thick foam tape when they do Euro Delivery. My 5er had the holes drilled in it for the front ED plate...which I know is mandatory in Germany. If they used a removavle adhesive that would be awesome so I could ditch the front plate when I get it back home....and have no drill holes. What are the chances of the Munich delivery people agreeing to this one?

It's always funny listening to people complain about front license plates. When it's the law, put the front plate on. Its not that hard to grasp. It gets even more funny when the car in question is a German car where front plates are mandatory.
Just put the front plate on and go about your business. The plate neither adds nor takes away from the beauty of the E90. The hassle of getting a ticket for the "I'm above the law" thinking isnt worth it either... If people can find ways of putting the plate on the car without drilling, go for it. But put the freakin plate on the car if that is the law in an individual's state. |

I respectfully differ KU, it does take away from the beauty of the front of the car. Compare these pics, there's no way anyone can tell me that the front of this car looks as good with those plates on as a clean bumper without holes or license plates. I'm not gonna tell someone to disobey the law, but the law aside, plates do look worse than no plates, IMO.

to me it DEFINETLY looks better without the front license plate. i live in cali and its just like mfstout said. if your just driving around they wont pull you over for something like that but if your parked on the side of the road you might get ticketed for it. Not sure how much the fine is here. i drive around in my slk without front license and havent got pulled over yet

I agree. I would prefer not to have the front plate. The car looks so much better without it.
But that said, I have already asked the dealer to set the front plate up. Here in WA, its the law. |

I live in Kansas (one plate state) but am a Missouri resident (two plate state). Sure, I'd prefer not to have the front plate on my car but since it is the law, it is there. No ifs, ands or buts. Those that do otherwise garner no sympothy from me when they complain about getting a ticket for not having a front plate. The ones that havent been given a 'no front plate' ticket, your luck will run out sooner rather than later. If people are so disgusted with front plates, move to a state where one isnt required. There are 20 US states that only require one license plate which means 30 require both...as well as a majority of the world. [sarcasm]But since having to be identified in our vehicles is such a bad thing, we should all complain. It's the American way. [/sarcasm] |

Well, I had a ticket for no front license plate in San Francisco a couple months before.... guess how much......... $100. Supposingly if you put the plates back on and take the car for inspection, then you just need to pay $10. But, I rather pay the $100 fine instead of drill the holes, considering I only got caught once in five years, I think its worth the cost of paying $10 per year for having no front plate. Hahahaha.

In the end, each to his/her own. I am prepared to pay a ticket a year and deal with the issues. I hear gun shots outside our chicago condo every now and then so there a lot of worse things you have to worry about in life. This, is a minor one and you only live once IMO.

Well...in Michigan, we are a one-plate state, but I'm going to keep the front plate frame just in case I move to a state that requires a front plate.

Its true the New Jersey plates downgrade the look of the car. This is principally because the plates look cheap and tacky against a quality car - particularly with their 1970s two-tone shading. Front plates are a legal requirement across Europe, but although plate colour and style varies with country, they generally look straight-forward and smart. No one questions it and they do not degrade the look of the car - just look at some of the photos of European cars.

Thanks for all the replies, gents. I'll contact my dealer before the car is delivered and insist on no drilling.
FWIW, I'm in Georgia which doesn't have a front license plate law.
