Trunk Light Meltdown

When I went to change a burnt out light bulb in my trunk I found the light housing was melted (see pics). My Bimmer is a 2008-128i.The bulb I removed was a 12v 10W. Maybe once upon a time, someone (previous owner) put in the wrong bulb or the trunk had been left open for a long time. When I put in the new bulb it was very hot the touch within a few seconds. Is this normal? I'm worried about potential fire. Is there something going on that I should be concerned about. I did confirm that the light goes out when the trunk lid is closed. Thinking of replacing with LED. Any comments in this regard would be appreciated.

Strange, 12v 10watt is correct.

The hot-to-the-touch is normal, melting could just be that the bulb wasn't seated right, or that, as you said, the trunk was left open for a while. LED's can't hurt, unless you're a credit card, they use less energy, meaning you don't have to worry as much about draining your battery by leaving the trunk open.

Replaced factory light with LED light C/W housing from iJDMTOY.com for $18. Fit was perfect and light is very bright. Great solution to a potential fire in the trunk if the light is erroneously left on for an extended prior of time.

If I leave my trunk open, the light goes out automatically after a bit. Need to look elsewhere for root cause of melted light cover.
