If you're driving 50mph and you're on a very hilly road, then it would be wise to use gearing that does not allow the engine to drop it's speed too low under high load. That would be "lugging" the engine, and that can cause excessive wear and damage.

Basically, if you drive a manual trans car, then learn how to drive it, well before you get a new BMW.
thats nt how n54 works though, the valves gum up because there is no fuel flowing over them due to DI. you can't avoid it without meth lol

doesn't neccessarily save fuel (the counter still hits 39.5/100 lol)

cruising in traffic 4k is about where i land, high 3's low 4's

anywhere else pretty much is 7000-7100 lol.

no idea how you manage <2k, no idea. so slow -_-
My car would never see 35 in 6th. Maybe 60 but never less than that. Even my wife knows better.

as long as the engine isn't struggling (it shouldn't be), thats fine

well, with my gear ratios, it's about 1400rpm (40km/1000rpm)... a tad above 1000rpm is where the struggling stops

1500 is where it REALLY comes alive though.

Wasting Fuel

This car has so much torque that 35 in 6th gear really is no problem. On a hilly road, I'd rather choose 5th, but cruising along on a relatively flat road, why waste the gas?

normal driving, usually 3k on my 128i.

on my dads 335i bone stock normal driving: 2500-3k, theres no point in lugging the hell out of your engine. The motors are meant to be revved. While i don't know the fuel mileage characteristics of the n54 engine, i know if i lug my n52 i get worse mileage then if i rev it up higher.

I just don't know how I am going to survive when I move back to the states in a couple years... I shifted into 5th at 140mph yesterday. But on the day to day I like to shift at 4k rpm, but I skip 5th normally when I get up to speed and cruise on the Autobahn.
