BMW's potent 3 Series plans (wheels24.co.za)

I found this information on www.wheels24.co.za

BMW's potent 3 Series plans
13/06/2005 08:59

The M3 isn't the only hot BMW 3 Series model on the cards. BMW is also planning to introduce two other potent derivatives, of which one is a diesel.

The 3 Series range is set to expand with the introduction of a powerful 335i - an M3 understudy - and a flagship 335d.

Both cars are due later this year and will probably be launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

The 335d will feature the 5 Series' much-acclaimed 3-litre diesel engine with two-stage turbo charging.

This engine delivers a maximum output of 200 kW and, more importantly, 560 Nm of torque at 2 000 r/min, with 500 Nm available at just 1 500 r/min.

It will propel the 335d from standstill to 100 km/h in about six seconds.

Two-stage turbo charging resolves the conflict of "turbo lag" when accelerating hard at low engine speed and increases the availability of power at higher engine revs.

The first turbocharger provides an almost instant kick of turbo pressure at low engine speeds while the second turbocharger cuts in at higher engine speeds to boost power throughout the higher rev range.

Newton * Meters it is a measure of Torque.

1 lbf*ft = 1.356Nm or 1Nm = 0.737 lbf*ft

Nm is the SI (Scientific International) unit for torque, called Newton-meters. It is the metric "counterpart" to ft*lbs.

kW is metric counterpart to hp. (The SI unit for power is the Watt)

1 hp = 0.7457 kW
1 lbf*ft =1.3558 Nm

I knew that engineering degree would come in handy!

So we may have to wait until Sept 15 to get the goods on the 335i -- the "M3 understudy". The twin turbos for the 335d make sense. Any further info or speculations on what engine etc. the 335i will have? Can the N52 be turboed? Enlarged to 3.5?

Do a search on the 335i, you will find a BMW document showing it as a 3.0L petrol engine with Direct Injection and Sequential Turbo's called the N54

Excellent. The N54 has >200kW (= >268bhp). One would hope >>>200kW. 15kW seems hardly worth the expense of the turbos if that is all we get beyond the N52. One would hope for something closer to the S4, but I suppose that would put the cost into the stratosphere. Further speculation on pricing? Feasible to get one euro delivery with ZHP (some similar package might be standard? One might imagine alcantara and 19" wheels) for under 40k US$ ? This is beginning to look like the car of my lifetime -- I am holding off on ordering an E90 until the details become available. Then again, maybe I should get on a 335i wait list. Any advice on how to convince the wife that this is sane would be most appreciated...

As a former 2002tii owner (1600ti -> 1600 -> 2002 -> 2002tii -> don't ask, I got married, long BMW hiatus until -> current 323i), it seems so much more 'form follows function' tradition to label the 335i as a 330ti or 330turbo. Maybe it is just my current 323 (2.5 e46) label that is the cake crumbs that the pharsee put under my skin...

Rumours from good sources here say around 240Kw

Remember it still has to be slower than the E90 M3, even at altitude where the turbocharged engine looses less power, so they cannot make it too powerfull

Thanks E90Fleet! 240kW (320bhp) would rock an E90. With alcantara and appropiate brakes/springs/shocks. No steering assist. I am waiting. Any data on release dates? If they show it in Frankfurt in sept, and get it out before the M3, one would hope that it could be as soon as late spring 2006?

Part of a most wonderful trip to SA (joburg, pretoria, capetown) 12 years ago involved renting a 318i. My wife is a paleoanthropologist that gets over there now and again, and I got to tag along once. Some wonderful roads!

At a bare minimum.

The barest minimum. If we can get 325i euro delivery with ZSP for 29k (assuming you can find a dealer willing to sell one at 1.2k over invoice), 330i with ZSP for 34k, then a 335i euro delivery with no extras for 39k is not out of line with a 5k step up. That would translate into something like a 46k MSRP USA with no options. A very expensive little car any way you cut it. Enough so that anyone getting either a 325 or 330 would be very happy with their sane choice.

Any pricing info on the M3 yet?

My apologies for the typos. I meant ZSP, not ZHP.

Some more speculation...

From Pistonheads:

BMW BREWS TURBOCHARGED 3-SERIES
New 330bhp 335i arrives in 2006

BMW 330i. Following on from our road test on the BMW 330i, posted yesterday, BMW is to launch an uprated version, the 335i. Due on the mainland in just over a year and in the UK six months later, it will feature a turbo-charged version of the 3.0-litre petrol engine found in the 330i. This boosts power by 72bhp to around 330bhp, which is just 13bhp short of the current 3.2-litre M3, and looks likely to get you to 60mph from rest in some six seconds. [the 0-60 figure must be for the 335d]

The turbos will be fitted so that one works at lower engine speeds to boost low-end torque, while the other picks up higher up the rev range. Autocar speculates that it will be mated to a DSG-alike double-clutch gearbox, for seamless shifting. [that sounds like the 335d]

According to this week's Autocar, which broke the story, it's intended to plug the gap between the 330i and the forthcoming M3, that will have a 4.0-litre powerplant shoe-horned in, along with a hefty price. That won't launch until 2007.

Interesting if this happens in the US. It matches up in a way with the four performance levels offered by Audi--A4 2.0T, A4 3.2, S4, RS4.

BTW--this is not intended to provoke an Audi vs BMW comparison. I'm just pointing out that another German car manufacturer thinks it makes sense to offer 4 levels of performance in this class (even though the RS4 is fantastically expensive--hope E90 M3 doesn't follow suit.)

Also, makes sense if BMW doesn't want to leave money on the table. The 335 could put potential buyers in a real bind with bookend prices surrounding the S4 with the RS4 being out of reach.
