So Whats the Deal With the Headlights?
Alright. So I had one of my headlights get smashed up the other day. So im looking for a replacement. Now question. Ive heard in the past that you can buy the actual light cluster and the ballast separately. So could I simply reuse my ballast, which is fine, and only replace the light housing unit at a fraction of the cost? I really hate to get my insurance involved, but $1200 is far more than my deductible...so im looking for ways to do this cheaper.
Also on a side note my hood got a decent dent in it too, looking to replace it if I end up going through insurance. So I looked up some prices for the Vorsteiner hood. Checked Jlevi, HPA, Vivid, all of the places that stocked it last year but I cant find it. So whats the deal? Do they just not make it anymore? Thats disappointing then. |

Man, that sucks. I'm sorry!
The ballast and the xenon control unit are indeed separate. That saves you about $400 bucks. However, the headlight housing unit itself is still going to be about $750 dollars. Plus the cost of new bulbs, which shouldn't be too much except for the $150-200 D1S bulb for the low/high beams. So that's still like 900 bucks Which side got hit? I have a passenger side light with no problems except a couple of the plastic tabs that keep it in place are snapped and there is a superficial (buff-able) horizontal scratch across it. Would let it go for like a hundred bucks. Not ideal, but hey it's cluttering my house and you said cheap haha.

Ahh damn. So I got the prices backwards...I thought the housing was $400 and the rest was in the ballast.
No I left the car with my dad. He had it parked and walked out to it. And no its driver's side, haha. Im half considering replacing it with the LCi lights. Because of the mileage of my car ill end up replacing both...looks like its indeed insurance time then...sucks. |

On a side note, if you have a bad headlight getting replaced... it would be an interesting opportunity to determine exactly what the orange part is made of - a film, a removable piece of plastic, etc. Also gain some insight on how the headlights might come apart (oven temp needed).
I'd be willing to cover shipping costs if you wanted to send it to me to play with |

I was thinking of LCI'ing my car as well, but it's a 2008 Year One of the 1 car and I really am on the fence about changing it up that much.

I'd say don't go through insurance... better to have no claims imo. Financially you'll end up paying more later than the up front cost now... the headlights are freakin expensive though.
