I switched from a 135i vert. One test drive of the 1M and I put my deposit down that day.
When you know, you just know.

No regrets, quite the opposite, the 135i just didn't live up to what I was after.

Same here. Switched from a 135i vert, but without the test drive. Paid deposit 12 months in advance. The stats sold me up front.

Many of us are having this same issue ...

I drove Advevo's black 1M in 2011 when he just got it. I loved it. But with 2 kids...that's a no go...

Fast forward to autumn 2012:
I came from a F30 335i(the best 5 series ever LOL) 6MT which felt a bit remote and I had some issues with it.

I testdrove the 1M @ my dealer and after 15 minutes or so testdriving I wanted that car so bad.

The steering, the limited slipdiff, the brakes, the agility compared to other BMWs, the excellent useable daily power, and the wheels/stance /looks. What a car....

Cheers

I also climbed those golden stairs. The only blues I sing on occasion are for the lack of Le Mans on the 1 Series M Coupe.

Actually traded up from a 128i. Almost traded up to a 135i before I heard about the 1M and was able to get an allocation.

I came from a 2008 135i automatic. This 1M is my first manual car and I love it. The driving feel/experience is to die for. It is way more fun then my old 135i.

Loving it. I've left it stock so far other than tires and alignment, I have a couple other cars that I play with. Balance is clearly tail-happy, but that's a good thing. Which was going to be my main input for the OP...

For me the biggest differences between the 135i and 1M are the more neutral balance and the LSD. If you're the type of person that likes to drive sideways, the 1M is a completely different car than the 135i. If you're not, then there is less of a difference between a 1M and chipped 135i, so the cost difference to the 1M might not be as worthwhile.

I couldn't justify spending twice as much money on the 1M for maybe 30% more car. (vs my 135i)

It's the entire package that makes a great car like it made a great plane. Also like the 1M the P-51 came out of necessity in a super fast development cycle and the threw in bits like the Spitfire's Merlin V12. The rest is history.
For 135i v. 1M parts, check pages 3 and 4 of this PDF-link. Info straight from the horse's mouth: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/attac...2&d=1323199127

The 135i, 135is and especially the M135i are very good value for money - definitely worth their salt (though, not fond of the "Active Sound Design" sound composer feature in the M135i which "enhances" [read: fakes] the engine sound inside the cabin: http://f20.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=786318). However, IMHO the M135i (M Performance car) is to the 1M (M car), what "very good" is to "excellent", not only in terms of design, driving experience and production volume (15-month production limited to 6309 cars worldwide), but also in terms of resale value and 'future classic' potential (check the numerous accolades and révérences by car enthusiasts of all sorts).

True, the M135i will help your heart racing at a higher pace, but - as acknowledged by many car enthusiasts of all sorts worldwide - the 1M simply takes it to the next level: capable of your heart skipping a beat.

As we all know, the successor of the 1M will be called "M2". I guess that BMW will never call a future car a "1 Series M Coupe" or "1M" anymore. In the 70s the "M1" name slot was taken. In 2011 the "1M" name slot got taken too. So, if in a few decades someone says that he has "an M2", you likely will ask "which generation ?" (alike other M cars). However, if at that time someone says that he has "a 1M", you will know straightaway that he got hold of that well-sought after 2011-2012 benchmark pocket rocket. You will likely reply: "Lucky you ! Those 6 cylinder motoring marvels - especially those in that epic orange introduction color - are bloody hard to find at a decent price nowadays. Man, I still kick my head for having sold it in in the past." Sorry Oz, could not resist that one.

Let's paraphrase that: "For the competition, the 1M is/was the sum of all fears".

As a fun test, check all "Porsche Cayman v. 1M" reviews: car journalists systematically got a Cayman R from Porsche for a 1M comparo. Pure coincidence or because the Cayman R was also launched around Spring 2011 ? If my memory serves me correctly, some journalists poked Porsche about the fear for the "Baby M car". Remember that a 1M ain't a 1M CSL ("CSL" = "Coupé Sport Leicht" ["Coupé Sport Light"], while the 1M is quite a heavy puppy), not as stripped as a Cayman R.

In 2011 the official UK BMW website had a section (broken link nowadays) "Compare the new BMW 1 Series M Coupé against its competitors" where BMW showed a very brief table comparo of BMW 1M v. Audi TT RS Coupé v. Porsche Cayman S with the message "All data published is supplied by KeeResources' KWIKCarCost. All data in comparison table is valid at December 2010". Maybe some folks at Zuffenhausen got restless and decided to offer the Cayman R (instead of the Cayman S) to car journalists for 1M comparo testdrives ? As a matter of fact, as time moves on some people will remember that the 1M and the Cayman are close competition, but will have forgotten that each time a Cayman R was pitted, not a Cayman or Cayman S.

Anyways, at the end of the day those are all great cars.
