When I was looking at e90's, I made a cd "Loud and Obnoxious 1" to bring to the dealership. I sat in the 325 there with the standard system and blasted many different types of "loud" music and assorted music. I was incredibly impressed with the stock sound system, and did not care to spend another $1200 on sound. I am incredibly into sound, good sound, and music, and listen to it very loud, and I do not regret for one second not getting premium sound. The stock sound system is incredibly good imo. If you are unsure I would recommend doing the same. It is your car, your opinion on sound, that matters. You are the one who will be listening to it every day - burn a cd and go test it out. I do not think you'll be disappointed at all with the stock system.. Hope this helps some..

how much do you value good quality hi fi audio? what d of music would you sten to on the L7? lots more questions you need to ask yourself before committing to rhe L7. for me, it was a no brainer but for someone else, the L7 is not important but maybe xenon lights are his/her higher priority. so lets say high quality audio is important for you, then it would be worthwhile to consider the best option the factory can offer. or would you prefer an aftermarket system? would you trust your new e90 to a specialist (with a great reputation etc) to pull your car apart and hopefully put it right again. is the L7 budget ok for you or do you have a higher budget? too many variables for us to answer someone we do not know. you really need to audition the L7 closely and make a decision based on your needs/wants. i find the L7 very nice and although it lacks the deep bass (due to limited subwoofer size) i could not have less than the best the factory can supply but i would not consider an aftermarket system because i dont want anyone pulling my car apart. hope this helps.

I've been disappointed by the Logic 7. But then again, I came from a MB Quart speakers/sub and JL Audio amp system in my Volvo so I was quite spoiled. I guess for an OEM system it's not bad but it is rather underpowered (20 watts to each of the speakers and 70 watts to each of the subs, at 2 ohm impedence).

My question is how does the Logic 7 system compare to the Harmon Kardon in the E46?? Anyone go from an E46 with upgraded Harmon Kardon system to the E90 with Logic 7 ? is there a difference?

Harmon provides some stuff for the Logic 7. The rest are provided by some other company (forgot which). E90fleet should know about this. I think they're both good but the Logic7 is better. |

Stereo Evaluation: 2006 BMW 330i
System Score: 8.5 Components: The 3 Series has set the standard for driving dynamics for years, and now it's inching closer to setting the standard for audio components as well. All 330i models come standard with a 13-speaker Logic7 surround-sound system from Harman Kardon. The layout consists of a center channel in the dash, tweeters in the A-pillars, mids in the doors and rear deck, and two subs beneath the front seats. If there's a flaw in the component setup, it's the head unit. Like most of BMW's setups, the majority of the controls are unlabeled soft buttons making for less-than-obvious functionality. You're also forced to live with a single-slot CD player; a remote mounted six-disc changer is an option. Audiophiles will find some solace in the ability to plug in their MP3 players through an input jack in the center console, but there's no dedicated iPod connection. Performance: Minor component issues aside, this is a system that is hard to find fault with. Whether it's plenty of clean power you're after or crystal-clear sound, this system delivers on every front. We initially felt as though the system lacked the power of similar Harman Kardon systems in the 5 and 7 Series models, but after cranking through various CDs we found little need for more juice. We did notice that despite the Logic7 circuitry that's designed to expand two-channel sound into seven, the sound stage still seemed planted up front. It doesn't make for a poor listening experience by any means, it just didn't seem to "surround" us as well as some of the other Logic7 systems we've heard. Best Feature: No need to check the options box to get this exceptional system — it's standard equipment in the 330i. Worst Feature: No in-dash CD changer? C'mon, BMW, get with the program. Conclusion: When you get a system like this as standard equipment, you've got little to complain about. Take the time to learn how to use the controls and you'll be rewarded with sound quality that rarely fails to impress. Its sound quality is a 10, but with a single-disc CD player and hard-to-use soft buttons it ends up an 8.5. — Ed Hellwig Stereo Evaluation: 2005 Audi A4 System Score: 8.0 Components: Our test car came equipped with an optional Bose Premium sound system with AudioPilot noise cancellation. Our car was also equipped with an in-dash CD changer, which is offered in vehicles that don't have a navigation system. This Bose system uses 10 speakers including a subwoofer and provides two SD/MMC slots so you can play stored MP3s. Performance: Those who take an old school approach to car stereos will like the simple controls of the Audi's Bose system, which is the opposite of what we've written about the same system when it's paired with the optional navigation system. Here, there's no learning curve required, just well-marked large controls with a quality feel. One of the best features is a customizable memory list that can combine a driver's favorite "stations" from FM, AM and satellite radio. The ability to quickly switch between a local AM radio station for traffic updates, then back to XM music without having to navigate submenus is wonderfully convenient. The downside to the favorites list is that you do not get the benefit of seeing the song title and artist name on the screen the way you would if the display was set to just XM. One minor distraction that we never got used to was the odd steering wheel controls. When used to advance CD tracks, the controls are counterintuitive as you roll down to move up a track and vice versa. The sound quality is solid, but not quite as good as we expected given some of the other Bose systems we've heard in other Audis. Lows lack punch, the mids seem overly boosted, and without midrange controls we could never get the exact sound we wanted. The simulated surround sound sometimes leaves you feeling disconnected — the volume and tone are fine, but the sound presence is lacking. Plus, the Audi's stereo has a more mechanical sound than other high-end audio systems. We'd prefer a more natural tone. The Harman Kardon system in the BMW 3 Series performs better in both of these areas. Best Feature: Customizable memory list. Worst Feature: Confusing steering wheel controls. Conclusion: The Bose Premium is clearly better than many other systems, but no one will be wowed by the sound quality — we're not. — Ed Hellwig Premium its a carver am / fm radio THX certified, another level of audio is it not? Its a reasonable view by some one who knows what he is saying, and in the end standard sistem is only good. In a small place, windows shut, it depends if we are listening one interview in the radio or a full concert of hoobastank and in my pro logic 7 i put mp3 on cd player and they seem the original. |

The major difference is L7 is full spectrum on all channels just like your home theatre system no matter where you seat you will alway hear the same frequency that what makes it better when compare to typical stereo system.

i had a loaner 325xi about two weeks ago with standard system (have L7 in my 330i). if you're an audiophile, it's going to take you about 0.1 seconds to realize that the difference is VERY significant. with standard sound, it simply feels like something's not right. you're going to try to adjust those two sound settings that you'll have (bass, treble) available as much as you want and the sound will still be muffled and kind of empty.
in short, L7 is not the greatest sound system out there but it is DEFINITELY worth the upgrade from standard in E90s.

The name you are looking for is Lexicon. They produce the Logic 7 together with Harmon Kardon. I have Logic 7 and it is amazing! Like a movie hall or theatre. Amazing

I opted not to save the 1200 and didnt the Logic7. i actually didnt try it out afraid that i wouldve like it too much. the standard system is pretty good (better than avg.), but only if you bring quality media/music. if you can afford the extra $$, try L7 out during a test drive.

Logic 7 is created by Lexicon, a division of Harmon International. The technology is used on numerous high end home and theater systems. It creates a sound stage across the front dash and features accurate reproduction of each instrument

This is a legitimate question but one that can really only be answered by the OP testing the stock and Logic 7 systems on his/her own ears. Personally, although I listen to a lot of music in the car, I don't think the Logic 7 system is worth the extra (unless it's standard). I'd think it has a very high profit margin. One reason it does sound so good is the expanded woofer/low frequency units. This always helps music sound more rounded and deeper. However, the frequency responses in a car are also affected by low frequency tire rumble, suspension vibration, road noise, etc, so its best to test in traffic than in a showroom. The stock system is pretty good although when played loud, you definitely hear more distortion. I do think the MOST iPod adaptor is a must have (also very high margin)since its so well integrated into the car - even though there's no sound quality difference going through the AUX socket. Usability is the key (such as the iDrive display and the steering wheel controls for track and volume - regardless of input source, Radio, CD, telephone).
