Let's play "Totaled or not"
2008, 57k miles. T-boned at 40+ mph by someone that blew through a 4 way stop. Both side airbags went off. Frame damage? Who knows. Appraiser can't check it until early next week, so in the meantime we can guess. Place your bets. I'm mostly fine. Seeing a doc shortly to make sure. |

I'd say totalled. The whole side of the car would have to be fixed plus airbags, plus any suspension damage that is done.

1st, might want to blur your license plate (love it btw )
2nd. Glad to hear you are fine, and getting checked by the doctor. I was in an accident with similar damage on the freeway when some idiot side swiped me, I felt a little shaken, but it wasn't till a week later that I felt extreme pain in my shoulder and found out there were torn ligaments :/ and some nerve damage. 3rd. Probably not totaled. Damage looks bad, but with the tools available now to correct frame damage, it has to be pretty severe to have the insurance company actually total the car. plus I heard that in situations where the correct the frame, it feels like a brand new car afterward. |

I'm 60/40 for totalled. Side impacts can pretty easily bend the frame which would seal the deal but it's hard to tell.

I'm not concerned. If someone wants to use it to track me down, they're free to. The car and location combo were just about enough anyway.
Some more details on the damage: The door is really messed up, and would probably need replacing whole. The other two side panels are also done and need replacing, along with the side skirt. The front and rear bumper have some scratches, but may not need to be replaced. The hood has some scrapes from the stop sign I demolished (it was on a thick wood post). So that's a respray for almost the entire car. The plastic undertray got cracked by landing on the stop sign post. Who knows what happened to the front wheel. Amusingly, the passenger window got blown out by the airbag, and the tint held it together, so it was sitting curled up on the road. Last edited by Taki; 12-02-2010 at 12:23 PM.. |

Man that sucks, I'm going with totalled just because if that was my car, I'd want it to be totalled. I'm trying to figure out where in SP that is, but it's been awhile.

Jones Station and B&A Blvd. There's a Rite Aid there now, but may not have been when you last saw. Also a Park & Ride.

Obviously the front suspension is damaged. This is gonna cost quite a lot though I don't think the frame is damaged that hard. You were actually lucky that he mostly hit the door.

I would vote totallled....something on the suspension there is broke, not to mention the floor pans on the passenger side will all need to be replaced...i'd say at least an easy 20-25k worth of damage. The good news is soon you'll have a new 135

To fix it right it's totaled, I can nearly guarantee that. Both the A and B pillars are compromised.... that spells doom.

Totaled...but I am glad that you are not hurt seriously.. in addition, I am very pleased to see how our little bimmers hold up so well in accidents. Sure there is a ton of damage, but the bits inside seem well protected....

Yeah. The more the car breaks, the less I break. I'm ok with that.

Definitely totaled due to excessive frame damage alone (A pillar, B pillar, floor supports).
Glad to hear you're "mostly ok". Be sure to go to the doctor for EVERY little thing that pops up over the next couple of weeks, and keep your insurance company informed. |

Sorry to correct you sir, but that statement could not be further from the truth. I am not too sure where everyone is getting this idea that the frame is bent. From the pictures, the damage seems to be confined to the center portion of the car. This is a Unibody car which means it does not have a frame, but instead a center section with two SUB-FRAMES which are located nowhere near the damage in the picture.
As for the car, seeing as how BMW's sell for high salvage, it will most likely be a total. Depending on you ins. company. |

i assume everyone by noting frame bent, meaining needs more than just panels.
The unibody is a bit of a pita to fix, so much easier to deal with trucks/suvs on frame for repairs such as this. insurance companies are all over. I've seen cars worse than this, worth less fixed by insurance and cars with less damage being totaled out. I'd hope for total, esp with your milage.
