NBN Committee at Broken Hill trial of high speed fibre network

From APH.gov.au

The Joint Committee on the National Broadband Network today witnessed day two of a world first trial of a 100 gigabytes per second data transfer through the fibre network at Broken Hill, provided by wholesale platform builder NextGen.

“100 gigabytes is 1000 times quicker than what is in the statement of expectations from government, who are seeking 100Mpbs to 93 per cent of households, schools and businesses,” Committee Chair Rob Oakeshott said today.

“This trial happening in regional Australia at Broken Hill is therefore impressive.
“Feedback from NextGen is that this trial can and will work, and that there is demand for such large bandwidth from some large scale users, such as the mining industry and government departments.”

The committee has also heard from several other organisations and individuals including: Ninti One Ltd; Michael Wilson from Regional Development Australia Far West; Maari Ma Health Aboriginal Corporation; Broken Hill City Council; the Royal Flying Doctor Service; and the Far West Local Health District Board.

“The committee will be following up some particular technical questions raised by indigenous enterprise provider Ninti One and Mr Wilson,” Mr Oakeshott said.

“Both have some technical concerns and are also concerned that NBN Co is not maximising opportunities available to engage rural and remote Australia as best as they could. We will be pursuing these matters to clarify this.”

The committee will be in Melbourne on 28 July to meet with the Post Office Agents Association Limited, Capgemini Australia and Australia On Line.

Most countries fit inside South Australia though, with much more dense population. Australia is a tough geographic situation.

Actually it's not even party-related, it's issued by APH. There are a number of checks and balances before releases like that can be issued.

Looks to me like a few committee members and journalists need to learn the difference between bits and bytes..... that's a woefully written release in more ways than one.

That is exactly what I thought!

If they are actually talking bytes when they say bytes and bits when they say bits then the system must be performing 8000 times better than predicted!

Personally I don't think they know the first thing about what they are saying and are totally confused by the whole bits/bytes kilo/mega/giga thing - it's a bit of a worry isn't it.
