Worn Rotors

One of the rotors on my 135i appears to have lots of grooves in it. The car has only 13,000 miles. A shop foreman at the dealer looked at it and said BMW is refusing to replace these under warranty unless the rotor is worn past its thickness spec. What should I do?

Does the shop foreman think they need replacement? If there is a safety issue then I'd discuss with the dealer and ask them to tell BMW that it's a safety issue and that your car was driven normally.

If there is not a safety issue, then you're fine.

Shop foreman said they did not need replacement and that there was no safety issue. It just looks ugly. If the wear pattern on one side continues to be far worse than the other, I believe eventually the car will start to pull to one side, I will have a solid complaint and will probably get a replacement under warranty. Stay tuned.

Sounds like a plan. When in doubt, drive the piss out of your car...

I have 18k miles and the wear continues. Does anyone know a phone number to call at BMW to appeal if the dealer says no again?

Grooves are purely cosmetic. My car has the same thing, but only on the outside of the right front rotor, started when new. Not worried about it. I am at 45k now.

You should just drive it.

Does anyone have the min. rotor thickness for the front and rear discs on the 135i? Was looking at my rotors today, but noticed that there is no marking or line.

After 18K miles is there a difference between the right & left side pads? If so, that's a problem. If the are wearing evenly, I'd say you're OK.

I had grooves in mine when I bought it last year with 27K on it. I don't consider it much of an issue as long as it doesn't compromise the rotor's integrity (i.e. not worn in that groove to min. rotor thickness). It wasn't until they started vibrating through the steering wheel and pulsating from the pedal that I considered it and issue. Then BMW replaced the pads and rotors under warranty.
