You are wrong, I have been seeing quite a few M cars in the lots. I think they are not selling like hot cakes because of the price. You only have to order during the first model years, then they will have surplus starting the 2/3rd years. This has been the trend.

There are six M3's in inventory at my dealer. There is only one 135i, and it's a 2010 leftover with steptronic (the website also shows a 2011, but that car was transferred to loaner service). There are fourteen (yikes!) M3's in stock at another dealer. Neither one is more than 10 miles away from me and there are three other Houston dealers I did not bother to check.

There have been some real changes in car buying habits. I bet an M3 could be bought for invoice right now.

Have you ever asked if they have been sold already?

You can get any M3 at invoice or below since late 2008...

My point is the 1M will not be hard to get at all.

I think you're mistaken.

The production window is only 7-8 months. It is a relatively cheap car, i.e. more than a Mustang GT, but still $15K less than an M3. It has received a lot of hype from BMW. All of these things add to to increased demand.

Garage List
1999 Z3 Coupe  [10.00]
1998 318Ti  [0.00]
1998 318Ti  [10.00]
2008 128i  [9.00]
I predict slow seller as well. Data on mcoupe, z4 coupe, etc is similar.

46k is a ton of money for a perceived very small car. Sure, enthusiasts are out there, but how many?

This.

Quite a few ppl who have the money to buy a 1M can't drive stick or don't think it's worth the hassle with DCT/DSG out now.

Are there people out there that have the desire to buy (and can afford) a $50-$70K sports car and can't drive a stick?

I understand wanting DCT is a different thing.

Well, we all are speculating here but past data -bozola pointed that out already- tells otherwise.

Yeah, data for a completely different car! One that was damn ugly, to boot.

Actually, it rather looked like a boot

Yeah, that car didn't stand a chance in the US market. It was ugly as sin, and we don't buy hatchbacks either way.

That's a Z3 M Coupe... I think that Bozola is also talking about the Z4 M Coupe and Roadster lackluster sales as more recent examples of hoopla meeting reality.

But hey, I hope that BMW can sell as many 1M as they can. That's more money for the whole M Division and better M cars overall.

Z3/Z4s roadster/coupes are two seaters and are simply far less practical.

One series cars are not true four seaters. Possibly three seaters, unless the driver is short.

I and a 6'3 fellow both had plenty of room in the back seat. Which doesn't really matter, Kids fit easily in the back , so if you want call it a 2 plus 2 , it's still a TON more practical than a two seater. If you are coming home from the bar and there's more than one gal like the one in your avatar that needs a ride.... I bet you'll call your car a four seater straightaway.
