Every other bloke with a midlife crisis and no hair on his head owns a Boxster around here... some even have the guts to put a prancing horse on the back. I don't know how they're perceived in the States but around here they don't rate too well on the 'cool' factor. Even I thought they were cool growing up until I realized that my friend's Probe could go faster in a straigth line.

You could find a pristine 993 for around $25,000.
The other $15,000 could maintain it for years. Last of the air cooled. Doesn't the Carrara S have the wide rear and 2 wheel drive? |

My wife's been driving mostly 911's (one boxster snuck in) for over 20 years as her daily. We just throw snows on in the winter. But, and it's a big one, maintenance can be a nightmare. They've gotten better but little niggly things can drive you nuts. But winding it up or goosing it over 4k on the tach & you forget that stuff real quick. Even tho the specs are close, 911's feel much more roomy than boxsters, not nearly as claustrophobic.

E46M3 = cow on ice (I have driven both on the track). It will take cubic dollars to make a 135I work as well on the track as an M3. Suspension geometry, bushings, spring rates, shocks, weight distribution. That said it will really depend on the driver. Equal drivers, M3 wins... Daily Driver = 135I although I did spend years commuting into DC in a 911. I also commuted in a Boxster; but, visibility with the top up is probably as bad as it is in any car. On the track a Cayman (or to a lesser degree a Boxster) is a terrific car. Hard to match their stock performance. But, I did not choose either one of those for my daily driver. Boxster is also claustrophobic and nowhere to put stuff in the car. 911 you can reach behind the seats. I have commuted on long trips in both and the 911 is way more comfortable, that said it's the seats that matter on the 1000 mile trips. To me Porsche Sport seats are great for long distance travel, and oddly, non-sport seats are not very comfortable for extended periods.

Additional points in favor of 135i:
+tech: you'll get the latest iDrive, HDD based nav, iPod integration, phone integration, comfort access. Despite some minor grips with these features, I think BMW has some of the best and deepest tech around. +specification: you'll be able to spec exactly as you want - color, options, etc. (You can use this to help sell your wife if you need to, i.e., let her pick the color.) +euro delivery: you can enjoy a discount, a nice vaca in Europe, and the ED experience. +smell: somehow you can't get that new car smell in a bottle, it takes a new car! Both great cars. As others mention, maintenance should be a lot less on the Bimmer. |

You know, I LOVE the new car smell... Which is why I never bought a used car before (except my first college car). BUT, Griot's sells the new car smell... and it's pretty darn good.

Points taken M3Armand... I would just respond:
* If tech often annoys you, and you prefer portable/economical nav, that's cool. But $2.5K for nav/iDrive/iPod/phone integration and BMW Assist buys a lot more than just "nav". Whether it's worth it is your decision. Is iDrive worth the price? I think it's a adequate value, considering the cost of other manufacturers systems. And my career is IT - I love this stuff! (When it works...) * It's not exactly about your wife choosing the color, it's about making her think she chose the color. There's several color combos that work just fine for me for the 135i - for ext, Red, Silver, Grey, Bluewater, White, Tan, and for int, Black, Grey, Red, Tan. I'd make sure that she chose one we both liked. BTW, my manhood is usually in my girlfriend's hands... or other areas... and I like to keep it that way! |

i would say go for the 135 because the car is 6 years newer than the porsche. and 40k for a 996 c4s is wayyyyyyy too high! if it were a 911 TT that would be a different story.

Unbelievable. It's like comparing apples to oranges. I would take a Porsche to a 1er any day of the week. Unless the Porsche is overpriced.

Tech doesn't annoy me... a poor execution of technology and charging a high price does. I bought the NAV for the Z4 and it sucked. I bought the NAV for the Boxster S and it doubly sucked.... never again until they license the interface from Garmin or even Tom Tom.

I'm a Porsche guy who's owned several in the past & 2 right now.
Despite this I'd chose a 135 over a 996 C4S. 2 main reasons. 1 - Daily driver means lots of mileage & lots of mileage in a 911 means big running costs. 2 - I hate the interiors of the 996. If I'm going to be doing lots of mileage in a car I'd rather sit in the 135 than the 996. oh & I did over 50k in the year I had my 993, 40k a year in both my 986 & 997. Non of which were constantly in the shop. The only common things that went wrong were battery failures on every Porsche I've ever owned except the Cayenne. . |

For a daily driver, I'd jump on the 135. The '04 911 rides like crap...not to mention you're buying a 6 year old car with old technology, not to mention the upcoming maintenance bills you'll be seeing. Don't get me wrong...the 911 is a very attractive car, but I wouldn't want to ride in it every day. Then of course there's the 135's free maintenance for 4 years...not a bad thing to have.

Wow.... old thread... Well, I bought the 911 C4S with the following options... Can you believe this car stickered for this much money? Unreal...
$110,860 $83,400 AH $0 Black Full Leather Y1 $0 Seal Grey Mettalic M6A $115 Black Mats - Porsche lettering 680 $795 Bose Digital Sound 692 $715 Remote CD changer (6-disc) 425 $345 Rear wiper P74 $1090 Xenon Headlamp Package with dynamic leveling and washers X51 $13990 Carrera Power Kit 345 HP Includes modified cylinder heads, camshafts, exhaust manifolds, control unit, and aluminum intake manifold. Includes interior switch between normal exhaust and sport exhaust 342 $410 Heated Front Seats 982 $395 Supple Leather Seats/Trim XPD $1535 3-Spoke Str Whl-Carbon/Leather: Carbon Fiber finish on steering wheel rim (2.7a). Leather finish on airbag module (2.7b) and hub cover (2.7c). Y05 $880 Shift Lever/Brake Handle-carbon and aluminum 446 $175 996: Colored Wheel Crests 498 $0 Without rear model designation CRFT $3825 Brake Caliper In Yellow CCZ Sport Shifter So now that I've been driving the C4S for a while, I can't believe I even had to think about it. I know the 135 would have been faster (and much with the chip). But the C4S is just too damn sexy. Also, in day-to-day driving, I can't even feel the difference in hp. But each time I walk up to the car, I keep saying "damn, that looks good". Had I gone with the 135, I would have said "damn, that thing looks girly". I had to follow my wife one day while she was driving the C4S and I couldn't help but keep thinking how awesome it looked with the wide body! The style is "timeless". The 135 is "disposable". The ride is awesome. It's not "hard" like people think. Our A4 on H&R coil overs is still the stiffest car we own. LASTLY, with the introduction of the "M" 135, I would have been super pissed right about now that BMW kept saying "it ain't coming, it ain't coming" - but only to say that so that it wouldn't stop people like me from buying the current stock! So sorry guys... I know this is a 135 forum. But for me, the choice was a good one with zero regrets. Obviously, your personal choice will vary.

Had a '08 135i, now I have a 06 997 C2. The 135i was a very nice and capable car. The 997 is in another league. I liked the looks of the 135, but as Armand says, the 911 is timeless, a classic.
Performance wise I don't know how you can say that the 135 is faster. Maybe initially from a standing start, but the 911 just pulls forever. And from 65 to 100 mph it is no contest. X51! Great option!

One of my fondest moments in my car was racing a 911 C4S on the track. We headed around the final turn into the straight and I blew the Porsche away. Now, he did finally dummy me on the turns but straight line speed the C4S did not have a chance.
If you like twisties and status the Porsche is a no brainer. If you like the visceral feel of the power in a pretty agile machine than get the 135i. Either way you probably cannot go wrong. Have fun shopping!

The C4S is my favorite 911. Assuming you don't mind not having a new car warranty and paying for the maintenance costs, go for the C4S. Seeing that you already have a Porsche though, maybe mix it up by getting the 135 and have a couple of fun cars to drive. It is nice to order a new car exactly how you want as well. Definitely a dilemma.
EDIT: Just realized you already picked up a C4S.

Such a nice car, the Z4 M. Not sure that I'd want to use it as a daily driver though.
