Opinions on 2009 135i
Hey guys - I just test drove a 2009 135i today. I currently own an e90 335i sgm w/ black leather. The 135i is sedona red w/ savanna beige leather. The details are as follows:
22,300 miles Dealer wants $29,500 Warranty/free maintenence is up 03/2013 Not Certified 6MT M sport Cold weather Premium hi-fi Navigation The car drove very well and was very well taken care of. I think the color combo is fantastic. The red looks orange under bright light and its not too abrasive under shade. I think the price seems fair. One issue I have is that there is no Ipod/usb adapter. This is really disappointing because my e90 only has the auxilary jack as well and I hate having to change songs/music on my ipod and not through the idrive. EDIT: Searched on the forum and found that 09s w/ navi should have a usb port in the glovebox which should work w/ my ipod! Last edited by WWM3; 09-26-2012 at 03:38 PM.. |

My first question to the dealer would be why does it not have cpo certification? I think they can't certify a car if its production date is older then 4 years but I may be mistaken, you'd want that warranty though if you could have it just for peace of mind.

I asked and they could certify it if I wanted, which I think I might do. I do like the color in person, but I wonder if it would get old. Decisions, decisions!

Also looking at a 2009 135i M Sport (Black on Black), possibly signing papers on it tomorrow. The car is from the BMW buyback program (mechanical issues) and only has 22,000 miles on it. Car will come with factory warranty until May of 2013. I'm a 15 year DIY BMW'er and the car drives great except for one flaw that I'm not familiar with - Turbo's. At idle there is a repeat whine of the turbo's - like they are recharging every 20 seconds. The whine starts then after 5-6 seconds it fades out. Is this normal? If not what are possible issues?

What were the "mechanical issues"? HPFP, injectors, wastegates, turbos? I don't know about the whine of the turbos but my car definitely sounds different for the first few seconds after I start it up and then becomes quieter. With my recent mods it's even more noticable.
If you're a DIY BMWer...I wouldn't be too intimidated by these cars. A bit finicky yes, but if you're buying this car as an enthusiast and enjoy working on cars..turbos, HPFPs, injectors, coil packs....none of it will be that big of a deal. The turbos obviously a bit more imvolved as they're harder to get to but there are a lot of great DIYs that walk you through all of this. When I bought my car I was a bit skeptical about it all but now that I've spent more time with it and do all the work myself...not a big deal. If my turbos go...upgraded turbos....no worries...actually a good excuse So I'd say, if you're getting a good deal and the turbos are okay (hard to tell from an internet discription) and you don't mind or even like wrenching...go for it! Edit: there are some videos that have sound clips of startups when people were comparing exhausts...might want to look for a couple of those and listen to them to see if it sounds like the one you're considering.

I would walk away from the buy back one.
I purchased a similar 135 with 10K more miles, CPOed for less. Go for a CPO...I've put a new clutch, need new wastegates, vavle cleaning, AMP issues and some misc others with under 40K still.

I personally wouldn't have a problem with that....
First I'd find out what HPFP and injectors are currently on the car. It would take a mechanic less than a half hour to check. The latest injectors end in 261 and if I remember right the latest HPFP ends in 194. There are very few problems reported with them now although the injectors seem a bit more susceptible to things such as leaking and misfires. $125 a piece and a coding set up (all easy with good documented DIYs) and 30 minutes and you're good to go. Anyway, after that if everything checks out...I'd beat em upon price and enjoy!

$23K is a different story than $29K...(and 22K miles?) I'd consider that one too and just nit-pic everything before the 4/50K warranty runs out.
