Functional strong 17" wheels

I have little interest in bling wheel/show/poorly made wheels and I'm curious if anyone has any good thoughts on a strong and light 17" wheel that fits the 1er. I really would prefer to not have 18"s as they are definitely outside of the optimal size range for our cars, and silly 19"s are completely out of the question.

I haven't seen much as the priorities here seem to be elsewhere, but I thought I'd take a shot in the dark.

Looks like so far BBS RG-R 719h wheels are the only way to go.

Some of the mesh style wheels look really small in 17". I prefer a simple 5 spoke design.

I would prioritize by weight. Lighter wheels = less rotational mass and unsprung weight= better performance and handeling.

Advans are strong, but expensive.
Dtw-5s are cheap and effective.
Old m3 wheels are 17x8, I'm new to bmws so I don't know what the "style number" is but they're often found for sale on most sites that carry a BMW aftermarket.

I'm in the same boat as you, but I wouldn't discontinue 18s so fast. What you give up in final gearing and off the line accel you will make up in braking and highway mileage.

Also, tire prices are something to consider. What brand tires will you be running??

Yes I'm aware, hence why I shy away from any "bling" wheels. I also find form over function to look like crap. An 18" wheel that weighs as much as a 17" wheel is also still a worse performer as it has higher rotational inertia.

18"s are worse at braking and the tire determines the rotational resistance for MPG, not the wheel.

Michelin PSS only. I don't put junk on the single largest determinate of performance/comfort/safety.

17" Rims

Always like these and use them as winter rims! These are style 103-17x8, et 47. They are very similar to the style 261 that so many run but the 261 is 18".

Well. I think you need to think more to wheel and tire as a package. Inertia forces effects depend on the wheel and tire asy diameter and mass, if you use a 17in wheel and the recommended tire size you are almost back to corner 1

So, more than looking to The wheel size you need do decide tire sizes, then compare them.

My car came with 205/50/17 combo from the factory and switched to 225/40/18 and the mass staid within 1kg and the overall diameter only increased by 0.4mm but gained traction in all conditions. However, if i really wanted, I could of looked for a lighter wheel and still make an improvement while going to a larger wheel.

What tire size you have in mind?

I'm not sure what you can find from Volk, but they are generally lightest and strongest. BBS is way up there also. D-Force would also be a great choice.

What about using the e46 five spoke M-design wheels? Styling 68 M double spoke. I have seen some 1er's fitted with them and I think they look great.

You can look up many BMW wheels on this website...

One thing that's nice about the M-design wheels is that they are stronger AND lighter than the AG (normal production) wheels.

I'm looking at 235/45/17 Pilot Super Sports, which amusingly are lighter than the 235/40/18 versions by 1lb each. Couple that with the 17lb RGRs and you have a serious unsprung weight savings over the stock boat anchor 128i MSport wheels and the stupid run flats.

I had the LTWs(M Forged 2x Spoke) on my E36 M3. One of the few forged offerings from BMW, they were fantastic. I don't think they really jive with the E82 though.

D Force wheels are light, but from my experience with the E36, they are also pretty weak. Not sure I want to replace wheels that often.

20lbs is ridiculous and I want nothing to do with that.

I spoke to APEX about that and they didn't think the fitment would be very good.

Check the Team Dynamics webpage for popper fit
the eBay link i found had 17.3 Lb wheels in 17"
http://www.teamdynamicsracing.com/

Bimmerworld sells them for e36 e46. I would still email the official homepage and ask about weights and fitment

I think it is going to have to be the BBS wheels when I can find a good distributor. Cast vs 9000 ton forged is a no brainer to me.

That recommendation goes for all E36/E46 wheels. The 1 series has unique offsets. With camber plates you can fit a reasonable wheel/tire up front, but the back will always stick out much more than ideal in the rear. Rolling fenders, extra rear negative camber, and/or stretched tires can make them work.

Our warning about the fitment was related to the above issues. Track dedicated 1 series models are running our 17x8.5" ET40 square with 255/40/17 r-compounds, but the fenders need rolling/pull + plates. Our goal is to always have as close to a direct and rub free fitment as possible. If a member is looking for a street setup or they aren't looking to make the necessary changes for aggressive width wheels and tires, then we tend not to recommend those fitments.

BC forged wheels? Their one-piece series doesn't seem like they are that expensive.

Yes, because they are forged. I don't like buying things twice or more.

Yeah, the design is great because the spokes go to the lip of the wheel. Visually, it makes the wheel look much larger than a normal 17" like my winters.

Good looks, relatively cheap price (I paid $200 a wheel during a TR sale), and 17lb weight.

You cant do much better than that. Only downside is theyre a bit common.
