Aside from the M2, your garage is appreciating in value. good work
Buying 1M is a win win. If value goes up. Nice. If value drops, you are stuck with a 1M! Can't lose. : )

Thank you, except for my daily driver (the M2) I try to only buy cars with appreciation potential.

I bought those other cars several years ago and they have appreciated even more than I thought.

E30 M3 was a slow seller in the USA as well. Don't forget that . I wouldn't mind an S54 M shoe tho.

really? couldn't have been as slow as the Z3 or Z4 coupes.

The E30 M3 was a quite celebrated car in its day.....the Z3 and Z4 coupes were just considered weird freakshows! lol

Other than for collectibility and reasons of bragging rights, there isn't much difference between the S52 and S54 Z3M Coupes.

The S54 version also appears to have a higher incidence of rear subframe failures necessitating a rather expensive repair.

As a person that has driven both and bought an S54 M coupe there is no comparsion. Its a HUGE difference. The S54 M coupe has 315 HP, the S52 240 hp.

In a 3,100 lb car, an extra 75 hp in a short wheel base, rear drive coupe is night and day.

The S54 engine (from the E46 M3) is a gem with its 8,000K+ redline. The S52 (from the E36 M3) is a dud in my opinion.

both are great cars, you can't go wrong with either, but if you can swing it, the S54 M coupe is one of the best cars I've owned. If I knew how good it was, I would have bought one when they were cheap.

The S54 sings a sweet tune after 6000 RPMs...

The Z3/M Coupe was developed as an afterthought from the Z3 Roadster. The Roadster started out with an anemic 1.9 liter engine. Very little if any additional structural reinforcement was put into the rear (RWD vehicle) as the engine sizes increased. As a result, the Z3/M Coupes are known to suffer from rear subframe disintegration, which occurs more commonly as engine power increases. The car was simply not built for a 315 hp engine, and people who drive these cars hard have a much higher propensity to have their car's rear ends disintegrate. You can certainly pay your $4000 plus to get Randy Forbe's kit installed or do something else, but basically these cars are hot rodded at the owner's peril. Plus, by modern car standards they aren't anywhere near as safe as a 1-Series (exploding shrapnel from the driver's side airbag excepted )

My take on the Z3/M Coupe is that in 2016 it is basically a short trip around town fun car. You can certainly push it, but it is small, cramped, and not comfortable for long drives, at least not for me. And yes, I know that people drive their Clown Shoes long distances to attend the annual dork events, but I am not one of them.

They are all great cars, both versions of the Z3 Coupe and both versions of the Z3M Coupe.

Not in the US at the time. There were leftover M3's sitting on lots in 1992-93.

Remember back then BMW was a much smaller company and the performance delta between the 325is and the m3 was small enough and the price gap was so high that many didn't buy the M3 (kinda like the arguments for buying a 135 instead of the 1m). The 1980's is when BMW really became known by mainstream americans via the whole yuppie association. BMW was more obscure in the 1970s except for those in the know.

I just got my 1M last month so it will be a while before I add to the fleet.

I'd have a hard time deciding between the Z3 w/ S54 and the Z4 M coupe.

The Z4 has the looks for me but I love oddball cars.

The Z4M coupe is very limited also. I think they only made it for 3 years and around 2000 more or less in the states. It's a beauty and still has that sweet S54 with a manny only.

it's amazing HOW BADLY the Z4M Coupe sold when it was new.

I was once offered a brand new Z4M Coupe for $20k off the sticker....for around $30k......i should have bought it actually. At the time i decided to keep my Audi TT because i was worried about the Z4M's performance in the snow.

i had at least one other friend who had the same kind of offer in a different state. These cars just did NOT sell at all.....recession times and the Cayman was the 'obvious' choice then.
