I would have bought it either way, as long as it had the M3's version of the DCT and not the 1-series version with the beer tap gearshift. Traffic sucks in a 3-pedal car.

The DCT in the E60 M5 is not that impressive either. It's not smooth like M3

For a number of years I drove 25 miles each way on Atlanta freeways (I think we're always in the top 5 for traffic in the US) and never once wished I had an automatic.

I don't eat, drink, read, shave etc. in the car so, it's really not a big deal.

On second thoughts, there was about a 2 week period when I hurt my left ankle and pressing the clutch wrong hurt like a mother.

Not bashing folks who don't like manuals in traffic but I've never had issues.

In the minority obviously. But i didnt buy a 1M because it "didnt" have a DCT gearbox. I have had manuals all my life and love them to bits. I like nothing better than threshold braking whilst heel and toeing down the box. The skill required to get the best from a manual box,is terrific thing once aquired.

In saying that in my last cars i went to a lot of trouble to make my gearshifts faster. Even to the extent of using flat shift on my last Autronic equipped daily driver If the budget allowed I would have fitted a sequential gearbox.

The DCT box is a great thing. I dont find it diminshes my driving pleasure in the slightest. If anything it has improved it. In saying that I dont use the paddles at all, or "ever" drive in auto mode. (averaged 1600 klms per week so far)

I love rowing up and down the box, and never get tired of this fantastic gearboxs flat shifting ability or the extra ratio it offers.

I cant help but wonder why they did the M3 with the DCT but not the 1M.

I'm biased because I was not particularly overwhelmed by the charm of the E46 M3 SMGII gear box (DCT is a different breed, though). Hence, a "DCT only" spec for the 1M would have rained on my parade. But even when ended up wet, the 1M would have still been hard to resist. Luckily BMW M GmbH got some smart enthusiasts up there in the 1M development room + time was actually on our side: probably the way too tight development time schedule did not allow sufficient time for developing/testing a DCT version.

That's absolutely right, and I say that as the owner of a DCT R32. I'd probably get a 1M either way, but I wouldn't be willing to pay as much for it with the DCT. From the sound of it I wouldn't have to.

You are correct. DCT is def a non issue when it comes to control freedom or phun sic. Non of those things are diminished by the DCT box.

The E60 M5 doesn't have DCT! That is SMG and not comparable. SMG is an automated manual gearbox, the DCT is a Dual Clutch Transmission.

I think all of you people saying you would not have bought it if it came with a Dual Clutch Transmission need to either:

1- get off your high horses
2- stop being so snob
3- drive a dual clutch transmission car (and no a DCT is NOT an single clutch automated manual (SMG), NOR a torque converter automatic gearbox)

We're talking a DCT here, not any 'automatic gearbox'...

Yes, a conventional manual is a bit better when you want to 'have fun' and does feel a little bit better when you enjoy the pleasure of doing a perfect super-smooth heel and toe clutch-less downshift. But honestly if you have to let go of that third pedal, then a DCT is *by far* the best way to go.

A DCT will actually be a little bit faster than a manual (as is lower lap times), feel likes a manual (as in no 'slush-o-matic' feeling), and when set in manual with the paddle shifters you're just as in control of which gear you want to be in as with a manual.

Anyone that thinks otherwise just needs to drive a car with a proper DCT. Period.

The first car that used a DCT was the Audi Quattro rally car, and they didn't do it because they didn't want to use a clutch pedal, they did it only because it was faster.

To pass on the 1M only because it would only come with a DCT would be IMHO dumb and snobish. The car's other attributes completely make it still a great car even with a DCT (once again, I'm not saying SMG or torque converter auto here but DCT).

PS: And this is coming from a manual transmission uber snob that knows he will miss the S2000 manual gearbox he's had for the last 10 years when he gets his 1M (if you haven't driven an S2000 you can't understand: the manual gearbox on it makes a Miata gearbox feel slow and sloppy in comparison). Believe me, the clutch pedal is on it's way out and DCT is the way of the future, the writing is on the wall. And to be honest it's not that bad of a future!

I wouldn't have bought a 1M with DCT nor DSG. A manual gearbox suits this car the best imho
