Terrible Gas Mileage on 128i

just got my 128i and after 1000 miles im averaging 15mpg in mixed highway and street.

Is this normal? And why is the 128i getting such bad MPG?

I would say that is not normal (at least in my case). I have about 2k on mine and I'm getting 23.5 mpg mostly in stop and go commuting. Recent highway trip I got 29.

My miles are more highway than stop and go city streets but I am averaging high 20s (27-28) with a little over 9,000 miles on the car.

I would say that you either are in much worse traffic, or like to lead the pack a lot, or there is something wrong with your car. I can believe a normally functioning 128i could get mileage this bad but you would have to push it pretty hard to do it.

I posted this many times. My car gets on 130 mile trips highway, @ 78mph... 33-34 mpg.

In order to get 15mpg, you must have been going at least 110-120 mph constantly, or stuck in LA traffic for couple hours.

Admiral Adama....

you are NOT getting 15mpg mixed. The readout your are seeing is not your driving, that is a combined MPG estimate since the day the car was born, which means all the time the car has been left idiling for previous customers, and the small test drives here and there, have led to a poor read out.

this will not change right away, but as time goes by and your drive more, the MPG estimate will change accordingly. Change the tab to the current MPG estimate not the average one and when you drive look at the number. you will see on the freeway when you are cruising ur doing at least 21 or more.

so just give it time, the computer doesnt have enough data to upload, also i guess ur driving more city then highway, plsu it sounds like you got a heavy foot lol..

i went through the same thing with my 335, and 128. in fact my 335 said 12 MPG for an entire month until it slowly went up to 19 lol

My car consistently gets 29-31 highway at 55-65mph. But around town in light traffic with stop signs it averages 19mpg. I could see getting 12-15 if the car was in stop and go traffic for several hours a day (we have that here around DC, but I don't use the car to commute), or it was being driven at high rates if speed (100+mph) or at high rpm (over 5000).

I would check the air filter to see if it is clear and reasonably clean, and maybe remove the spark plugs and check them out to see how they look.

It will get better once the engine breaks in after say 5K miles. Its also because you probably have a lead foot right now and are enjoying your "new car".

Almost 26,000 miles on my 128i and I'm average about 23 mpg mixed city/highway. Keep the highway speed in check (about 65-70 mph) and I've seen low 30s highway average.

Almost 1000 miles on my 128i, averaging 23 mpg with mostly city driving. Hopefully that will improve after break in period (which still leaves the question if you should change your oil or not?)

I averaged 19 mpg for the longest time and finally reset the OBC and am now at an overall average of 20 mpg (with about 5500 miles on the odometer). I do NO highway driving most days, and when I do (weekend trips out of town or whatever) I'm usually doing about 100 mph.

Ideally, I'd like to be getting better gas mileage, but to be honest - it's not a huge priority for me. I would've bought a diesel if it were.

23 mpg is actually better than the EPA-rated city/highway combined number of 22 mpg. If you're seeing 23 mpg in mostly city driving, you're getting excellent gas mileage and have nothing to complain about in that department. Not sure which transmission you have, but I think the automatic and manual are actually both rated the same anyway. I'm averaging about 22 mpg and I have mixed spirited backroad driving and highway with the cruise set at 80.

I have a 135i and my friend has a 128i. In SF, I get better MPG's than him. I get around 14, he gets 8!

Weird... I drive fairly aggressively and keep the transmission (DCT) in Sport/Manual and still average about 23mpg city/highway with a 135. Autocross on the weekend included in the average too...

AdmiralAdama: Are you measuring your MPG with actual tank fill-ups or relying on the computer? if you are relying on the computer, you should reset it for the reasons bmwmike335 gave.

I get 25 mpg in mixed driving; 29 mpg at a sustained 75-80mph (I have a manual transmission and a light foot). It's been consistent throughout 28,000 miles. The computer - which I never reset - shows a "lifetime" 26.4 mpg.

A little less in winter:

'08 MT 128i convertible with 32,000 miles - about 75% highway or backroads.

Overall: 27.9 mpg
Best: 32.9 (Average of 3)
Worst: 21.6 (Average of 3)

Like they say, YMMV.

Coming from a VW TDi I was concerned about the mpg loss going back to a BMW. Mine is an 08 with over 45,000 miles, 6 speed manual and mostly highway miles. Computer shows an average between 29 and 33 (I reset every fill) depending on wind and temperature. Math consistently shows ~1 mpg less than the computer. BTW - these numbers are all with snow tires.
I am very happy.

I'll see mid-13's driving city only in my 135i automatic during the cooler months of the year and mid-12's in the summer with the A/C on. With a only 14 gal. tank it seems like I can't pass a gas station without feeling I should stop and fill up. 17-19 would be a joy! Good thing this car is a strong runner, otherwise it just would not be worth it. I'm beginning to think the 128i is probably the better compromise for real world every day driving. More sidewall for less bashing from city streets, much better mileage, and probably enough grunt to satisfy.

3 month update:

Car has 2000 miles on it now. Seems like my average is going up. I now get 22 mpg. With more miles put on the odometer I am sure I can get mid to high 20's.

I really think the 123d is the ideal compromise for those who do a lot of city driving. Not that we can actually buy that here. (Thanks, CARB! )

I've been getting ~ 22.5 MPG in my 135i, but if I'm doing nothing but driving in city traffic, it can drop to between 15-18.
