I was not only the president of the science club....but I was also the Captain of my Academic Decathlon team...our team SUCK!....because I had a weak supporting cast!

Respectfully, I must say...I'm not sure which is worse. Being President of the Science Club, OR Captaining a Crappy Academic Decathlon Club...(what is that anyway...in Canada we learn how to drink beer and not much else)...

Good you think gots a BMW, 'cause otherwise...well...we'd have our doubts about how cool you are.....

Academic Decathlon is a competition among high schools......each high school sends in a team of High(your master here), Medium, and Dumb kids to compete locally, county, state, and then nationally...in 10 different academic subjects with the last one being the SUPER QUIZ---which I got 4 out of the 5 questions right! Thank you.

Ha ha, okay, let it be known I haven't owned skates since college, 25 YEARS AGO, but I plan on getting some this year to go to lessons with my 4 year old daughter. Should I get figure skates or Tacks?

but anyway, decathlon! i went to a catholic school all my life and we had decathlon amongst the private schools here in cali... i did superquiz and logic eeh fun. everyones geeky ;D

I was on the math and science decathalon team too.

Maybe its a geeky asian thing... Precisely why grades and test scores alone will not carry you into the school of chice, esp if its an Ivy/near Ivy category.

Seriously though, Squawks is correct, If you've lived a relatively upper middle to upper class privileged life, don't write about how great your parents are for giving you everything (including a Bimmer ;-). Everything else being equal, the school will take a refugee scholar over a privileged scholar anyday. Write on a lesson learned from doing some sort of charitable service/how you helped in a charitable or club organization.

Leverage your lesson learned and provide insight or links as to why its important to what/who you want to become and why the school would be important to reach that goal.

Lots of people here would be willing to help out. Post your outline and I'm sure we'll critique/have recommendations.

Yeahh! See when I was thinking about what to write about.. I couldn't really think of anything dramatic that happened in my life. I've grown up in a pretty sheltered, okayyy life and nothing "horrible" has ever happened to me where I could write about. I was brainstorming last night and I thought of a few.. which do you guys think would make the most strong essay?

-My friend being killed when I was in the 3rd grade (I think this would be really good to write about because it changed my outlook. However, it was SO LONG ago.)

-My parents escaping the communists and the whole immigrants to the United States thing

-Leaving behind my small Catholic school community and learning to adapt to a change in environment at a public high school

those are like the onlyyy three i can think of. i'm not sure which one to write on.

I concur with Stew. The first one seems a bit too lugubrious and the third one is gossamer. The second one, however, you can build off of.

While your essay shouldn't be about your parents, you should make that your secondary point(s) and reference how their couping has affected you in a positive way. For example, you can start off explaining important, personal achievements and how such achievements hinged off your parent's struggling experiences to adapt to a new life in the U.S. Write how you were personally affected via secondary effects you've felt from your parents' woes and how they served as fetters and manacles in your pursuit for achievement. Put a little drama into it - you struggled, you realized the similarities of your parents' past troubles, you struggled harder, and lastly, you extricated yourself from hardships (thanks to your parents' successful dealings/inspiration with their own troubles).

Always remember that the essay has to be about yourself, not about your parents' troubles. Use their troubles as a way to let these admissions folks know how they made you a stronger person.

Follow these sagacious words from a fellow pandit and you shall succeed.

Ok, time to go back to work scrubbing the urinals.

My vote is for B with a dose of C.

You could reference your move from a sheltered small school to the larger public school as a personal growth of greater understanding of the world in which you live. When you hit public school, exposure was greater, more diversity, acceptance and understanding of more/multiple viewpoints, etc.

Make sure you don't turn your parent's struggle to escape communist China as their's alone. (Question - were you with them when they left?) Did you have to leave behind family, friends, and a relative comfort zone to go to a new world?

thanks so much for the help. ya i was thinking of doing B.. but I'm applying to UCs (University of California) and a large perentage of people who apply to UCs are asian and most asian people have the same story about how they escaped from communists etc. and that doesnt really separate me from the rest of the asian population. but yeah i think that topic would make the best essay. thankss for the help

Has to be about you, but you can use your parents as a backdrop/foundation to base your own experiences off of.
