Thumbs up 1 Series Coupe Voted Best Overall Car in 2010 What Car? Reader Awards

What Car? readers have awarded the BMW 1 Series Coupé the Best Car Overall accolade in the 2010 What Car? Reader Awards.

Quote:
BMW 1 Series Coupé

Second best Land Rover Defender
Third best Alfa Romeo Mito

It seems no one regrets buying a 1 Series Coupé. Not a single reader on whatcar.com gave the car less than four stars overall, and the vast majority dished out a full five-star verdict.

Almost every review raved about how brilliant the Coupé is to drive: ‘The last car I had fun driving was my old Mazda MX-5 – but the 1 Series Coupé is built for driving pleasure,’ said owner Jason Tang. ‘Throw it at a winding road and you’ll grin the entire way!’ said Kiran Naidu. ‘It puts a smile on my face every time I get behind the wheel’, said Stephen Hayward.

That driving pleasure didn’t usually cause you much pain at the pumps, either. ‘I haven’t been driving like an old Sunday driver, but my average fuel consumption is a touch under 59mpg,’ said Ian Greer, the owner of 118d Sport.

Complaints were few and far between, but a few reader reviews criticised the limited rear head- and legroom.

Jason said: ‘My only qualm is the lack of space in the back – if BMW lengthened the car by 30mm, it would be perfect.’

No suprise here. EVERYtime I press that starter button, I am reminded of exactly why I bought a 135i, and why I added the BMW Performance Exhaust. Next stops - BMW PS and Quaife LSD for a real trip!

It's nice reading this after all the bone-headed comments on the AW article.

If you didn't notice, there's also a section where they break down vehicles by class, and the 1er came in first in the coupe category (the 911 was number 2!).

Agree. My 135i is the 7th BMW product my wife and I have owned over the past ten years. I look forward to driving it every single day.

I think most of the voters for WhatCar were referring to the non 35i version of the 1er... It's only North Americans that are so obsessed with big engine... and thus a lot of the premium features are only available on the 35i, forcing even more people to buy the big engines...

This is probably why reliability didn't bog down the responses

The article doesn't mention anything about "overall reliability"...although my 1er HAS been very reliable...

I know you've been very vocal about your problems, but it's possible that you are an outlier, and not indicative of the general ownership experience. Just a thought...

I go to my dealer and they have so many loaners out they can't give me any.... They had to have avis rent-a-car come in and take over because they have more than 30 cars out everyday....

this looks like a European website. Most of the 1-series sold there are hatchbacks with 4 cylinder engines. I think the 135i represents a very low percentage of 1-series cars sold in Europe.

Most of the BMWs I've seen here (of all Series) are diesels as well.

In fact, probably the majority of cars sold from any manufacturer here are diesels, just judging by what one encounters on the road.

I love driving my car, except in the snow, that sucks, lol. But thats not the car's fault, Mother Nature is just a bitch.

I have 2 favorite parts, pressing the Start button on a cold start (I'll even roll the window down in the cold weather just to hear it), and that feeling of getting pressed into the seat when I hit the gas. Something my last 2 cars failed miserably at. Oh, forgot one, when coasting at speed and barely tapping the gas to hear the exhaust garble. Oh, heaven.

Jason, BMW makes a 3 series. That is what I think you are looking for.

The car warms up really quickly, has heated seats and mirrors, great defrosters, and doing donuts in the snow is a lot easier on the tires. What's not to like?

I think I'm headed down that path, God willing. Right now, I cannot see myself without a BMW as a daily driver.
