The sales tax is based on the registration location. So, if you pay a lower tax rate out of state, you will have to pay the difference when you go to register your car.

I also had a strange situation. I am buying my car in NJ where tax is about 6%. However, I will be registering my car with the address from my other residence in Orange County, NY which has a sales tax of around 8.25%. The dealer will charge tax based on my NY address so I won't have to write another check at registration. Even though I am paying higher tax, I will more than make up the difference within the first year with the insurance savings.

Also, the dealer were I will be picking up the car is about halfway between my two addresses

Bought my 325i with auto and Prem. Paid 34170.00 plus 2.75% one time title tax of $940.00 plus 4years tags of $80.00(20/year), miss $40.0. Total out the door for $35230.00.

I too bought from IG Burton in Milford, DE and saved a ton of money on sales tax. I highly suggest making the commute if it is feasible.

repeat post:

I'm based in Malasia since a week, and ordered my first bmw, a 320.

The taxes are incredibally high here cause they protect the local market, MRSP 74.000 USD for the 320, 85.000 USD for the 325, 115.000 USD for the 330! , fancy a 5 or 7 series? How about the 750 LI for 260.000 USD ! No discounts, no specials, no free upgrades. It comes with the small rims, want bigger ones? Buy the 325, want cruise control? Buy the 325, want adaptive cruise control, need to take the 330, same for the sportseats etc..

in Illionis we pay the local sale tax. This varies from town to town.
the city of Chicago is 9%, but where I live (~25km west) is 6.75%.
Plate's sticker is 78$/year

I feel much better about my 15%. I would think high sales tax must make leasing a more attractive option, since at least here you're avoiding paying tax on the residual portion of the car (i.e. 62% of the MSRP).

In US, if you buy out of state, you don't pay any sales tax where you bought it from, but you still have to pay sales tax in your home state.

If I'm not mistaken, can't you register your car in a no-tax State when you do European delivery? Technically, the car is delivered to you in Europe, and you could be living there if you wanted to. When it returns here its actually a used car, but you get to take receipt of the title prior to re-delivery in the USA. Then from there you can register the car in any State you'd like.

You'd have to convince the dealer not to collect any sales tax first, though....which he shouldn't 'cause he does business in a no-tax State in the first place.

Stephen, did you buy from hancock in Cola? They weren't that great, except one sales guy there.

SC has a low sales tax but they have a pretty high property tax compared to VA.

Sales tax on vehicles in Tennessee is 7% and state sales tax on regular goods is the highest in the nation at 9.25%. But no income tax, so always a trade-off.

I just left my home in SC and the tax is $300, but if you are military it is Zero! I moved to Hawaii and paid 4% or $1785 for sales tax. My property tax on my house was $2100.

What federal? There is no federal sales tax.
