If you want FUN just get the 128i.

I'm not looking for speed although the 128i might be quicker . I Do have a growing family and I think the x1 is Better for us . It is quite quick and it has a much quieter cabin than the 128i

BTW, I think the cabin in the 128i is pretty quiet... Maybe too quiet for my taste.

I also think my128i is, if anything, too quiet - I could use a little exhaust sound, at least until I reach cruise speed. At cruise I like the fact it is quiet.
With respect to 900 lbs cargo capacity on the X1, that seems fine to me. It looks like a 4 passenger vehicle to me and 200 lbs apiece for people and 100 for other stuff seems adequate. I don't weigh 200 and many of the people who I want to ride in my vehicle don't either so there would be some margin. If I want to haul something heavy, I don't want it in the car. I have a trailer for that. I looked on the BMWUSA for a hitch option for the X1 and didn't see it. I've seen a review that said at least the diesel models were rated to pull 4,000 lbs. It seems it can handle a trailer and an amount that would work for me. NJ gets some snow but also has lots of plows. For the little bit you have to drive through, I would be fine with rear wheel drive. I've owned both and driven both rear and 4 wheel drive in snow. The only real difference is 4WD will go through deeper snow. If you wait until the plow has gone by, rear wheel is sufficient in my experience (which includes a few decades in snow country). Decent tires are necessary IMHO, 4WD is not. I've almost always used all seasons but snow tires would add significant margin, especially in a RWD. To me, the decision point is still space. A 128i with snow tires would get around NJ just fine. But if you regularly need to fit full sized people in the back seat I would get the X1 (or S1 if that is what the 2WD is called). Jim

Yup... Another instance where I miss having a sunroof: I can crack it open in ventilation mode and hear the exhaust and air rushing by.

You're talking about a huge differences in vehicles here. Just determine your needs and go with that car. Both cars drive tremendously well for the class that they're in.
