Having the cruise control on an extra little stalk (unlike the buttons on the steering wheel most cars use) seems to be one of those features that BMW does just to be different, not better. Too clever by half.

On the new 3 series the cruise control is on the steering wheel.

Perhaps BMW thought the one series owners to be more into driving so they wouldn't need a light to tell them the cruise control was on. ? I think what we have is fine. After all who is really driving the car? Wouldn't the driver really know IF they activated the cruise control?

Again, wouldn't the driver know he switched on his high beams - so why give an indicator for that
The argument is perfectly valid for most of the other things one does in a car - so why exclude only this one.

Not exactly. It's reasonable to assume someone could be driving along a country road, flip the high beams on and cruise along for an hour or so and completely forget the brights are on when a car comes the other way. The big blue symbol is just a reminder saying "hey, you're blinding people."

Drop or raise the speed on the CC...?
Take your foot off the gas. if it doesn't slow down you're using cruise.

Initially a bit confusing but now I like it

The manual said not to engage cruise during breakin so the first time I used it was a trip to the tail-of-the-dragon and back around labor day in 2009. I got annoyed that I couldn't hardly see the little lever and didn't know what it was doing. Now I prefer this arrangement. With steering wheel buttons, it takes two hands to drive and use the cruise. With the extra stalk I can use the cruise, drive, and shift gears all at the same time.

My opinion is the BMW arrangement in the one series is better. I don't need a light to say it is engaged, I'd like to find a way to take if off my SUV (non-bmw, also has buttons on the wheel for the cruise).

I think the stalk mounted lever is great. Just push it and CC is engaged.
