Question locking acoustic signal ?????

In the manual under 'Setting Confirmation Signal' there are supposed to be four options for locking/unlocking:

1. harzard light flash
2. acoustic signal
3. hazard + acoustic
4. off

WTF, why do I only have options 1&4 ???

It's available for presetting in iDrive. Don't know about non iDrive cars.

An alarm system was not an option when ordering, does this come automatically with iDrive only???

Manual says nothing about requiring an alarm system to activate acoustic locking.

Well how to do you expect the acoustic sound to activate with out a speaker? That's why you need to purchase the alarm, when you purchase the alarm it comes with the trip sensors + the speaker. The speaker which makes the acoustic sound when you open and close the car.

Every car I have ever owned with keyless entry, has always used the car's horn for the signal. Let's see Jeep, Volkswagen, Audi, and Subaru all figured it out. I would've thought BMW could have figured it out as well.

Did some snooping on bimmerfest. The alarm is a $600 aftermarket accessory. Without iDrive, you can not get the beep lock signal.

I discovered that the bigger issue is the clown nose (red light under the rearview) will not blink unless you have the alarm. At least now I know what the clown nose is good for ... It is used to let carjackers know which window they can smash.

Yeah unfortunately thats the downside to BMW, gotta pay the price for practically every feature. It's all about the money making. The day before I took delivery for my car I told my CA to install the alarm in and she tried to sell me on the side moldings, im like ok how much? Shes like $670! $670 for four pieces of plastic? So $167.5 for each piece since there is one for each door? It's madness!

I am not sure if we must have the alarm to activate the acoustic signal. I've speaked with a BMW service advisor and they said it's only available on cars with alarm but may later become available on cars without alarm. But they don't know if that will happen or not.

I have the alarm (and iDrive), but no option to have an acoustic locking signal under the "Confirmation" menu. Hmm.... Software update maybe??

Didn't any of you get an owner's manual with your car? It amazes me how many people will post an opinion about something they think may or may not be a feature that is available, without RTFM.

September build without alarm, and no iDrive:

Setting confirmation signals

You can program the vehicle to confirm when it has been locked or unlocked.

1. Lightly push button 1 in the turn indicator stalk up or down until the symbol appears in the display accompanied by the word "SET".

2. Press button 2.

3. Lightly push button 1 in the turn indicator stalk down until the desired symbol appears in the display.

> (unlock icon) Confirmation signal during unlocking
> (lock icon) Confirmation signal during locking

4. Press button 2.

5. Use button 1 to select:

> The hazzard warning flashers light up during unlocking/locking.
> An acoustic signal sounds during unlocking/locking.
> The hazzard warning flashers light up and an acoustic signal sounds during unlocking/locking.
> (off) The function is deactivated.

6. Press button 2. The setting is stored.

I accept PayPal for anyone who wants me to read them the owner's manual over the phone. I charge $100/hour, but it's worth it because I make it sound very interesting.

I got 2 manuals with my pre-September, iDrive equipped car (English and German), but have really only read the english one. However, neither manual mentions the fact that an acoustic signal is possible when locking/unlocking and this is confirmed the vehicle settings menu.

It could be due the German noise laws, which are quite strict. Having thousands of BMW's chirping away when they're locked/unlocked would not be 'in Ordnung'.

Wrong - the horn is supposed to sound. You should think before you post, especially when chastising someone.

This is one of those cases where the manual says one thing and our cars do another. I have an October build car (no idrive, no alarm), and while the manual refers to an audible confirmation option (like you noted above), the actual choices in the OBC are limited to #1 and #4. Flashers, or nothing. I am not sure whether the other 2 options "unlock" once the alarm is installed.

If you are implying the horn should sound when the alarm is being set, v. a chirp, please note that BMWs do not use the horn but have their own whistle (older BMWs) or chirp (newer) sound.

I offer a similar service and include background music at the same price.

I can confirm [for post-September build cars w/latest firmware] that while the manual does indicate that audible confirmation is possible no such option currently exists within the OBC.

Hmmmm.... you're going to make me go out to the garage and investigate with the E91. Obviously, my beta-E90 won't have it.

E90Fleet - I'm with you. Don't know why it's not standard. Even more alarming (get it... alarming... ) is that I wanted the alarm installed before we took delivery and it wasn't available yet (it's different for the E91). Still have no word on it being available.
