2011 BMW 1M  [8.40]
has anyone here used Nokian Hakkapeliitta R (or R2) snow tires on the 1M? I ran these on the 135is last year and they were magnificant and would like to repeat them again this year on the 1M.

I was hoping to get these on 18s this year for the winter....but am not sure what sizes may be good. Ideally i want a square setup...so 235s or 245s probably?

any tips?

I have an almost new set of vredestien wintrac extreme in stock 19 size I would let go super cheap. Have 1100 miles on them. Now moved to Hawaii and do not need them.

Up here in Vancouver, Canada, same North West wet weather with a slight chance of snow, I have used Winter Sport 3D as well as Michelin Arctic Alpin PA3 (although only for a season) on a Subaru with 16x7 rims. Planning to get a set of 18x9.5 that will function as track wheels as well but stock winter sizing of 235/40R18 is a stretch (Apex recommends 245 instead, don't know if I have to go 245/35 or not but planning to stay squared for the rims).

Just wondering if anybody used Falken HS439/HS449 - how much trade off I'm looking at vs Dunlop WinterSport 3D/4D or Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3 / PA4? Market price seems to indicate 30% cost savings

BMW, in the manual, recommends 235/40 18 square. If you like em on the 135is, you should certainly feel the same on the 1M. FWIW, PA4's suck on snow but are good on dry cold streets ( I have on 235/40 18 set-up)>

According to consumer reports, might consider Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric All Season--very good in general and particularly on ice for an all-season. Among winter tires, might like Pirelli 210 Sottozero Serie II--lousy on ice but good on snow and wet, or Nokian Wr G3, best of the "performance winter tires" on wet and very good on snow and ice.

I've been using Blizzacks for the last 3 winters (Albany, NY). They are adequate. 18/235's It takes a bit of adjustment at first...the tires are squishy-er, the rears will spin if you even look at the go pedal the wrong way (forget M mode) and the steering feels a tad lighter with the smaller tires. But you can approximate enthusiastic driving on dry roads, and they can get you around in snow. Haven't tried others yet.

last year it snowed a TON in NY....and i have to drive every time it does (work at Hospital) which is why i'm most worried about the days it snows and want snow tires. I would do the Pilot Alpins if it didn't snow much (like Oregon?) but the Hakkapaliittas are on a different level than any other snow tires when the white stuff is actually on the ground! last year was so epic in the 135is with those Hakka R2s.

Here in Norway a winter tyre test was just released. The Hakka R2 comes out as the best performing tyre on snow and ice. Actually better performance than many studded tires. However, I decided to on the Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice 2 since the Hakka R2 breaking performance on wet tarmac is significantly longer than the Good Year tires. Tyres like Nokian Wr G3 will not have the same performance on snow and ice but will be a much better tyre in higher speed conditions. So depends really on the conditions you will be driving in.

Very likely to go 245/40R18 Goodyear F1 Asymmetric All-seasons rather than full on snow (or even performance snow like the PA4), but given that I have 18x9.5 rims my mechanic says I might end up with extremely stretched sideway (like the wheels will touch the ground when laid on its side rather than the sidewall), my other alternative would be to go 265/35R18 Michelin Pilot A/S 3 as Goodyear doesn't make 265/35R18 but that could be horrible in snow (really doesn't snow much here - mostly rain except last Friday)

i am running 245 hakkapeliitta R2s (18s) in the rear on 9.5 inch wheels and they fit perfect....minimal to no stretch at all. You shouldn't have any major issues.

Went with Michelin Pilot A/S 3 because of good discount locally, and turns out that 245/40R18 on 18x9.5 +22 rubs the front fender insert at approximately 1 full turn. Might have been better to go with +30 using a 5mm spacer but that setup adds up quickly because I wanted full tire rotation which would have needed a 10mm spacer in the rear. Even mounting the tire becomes challenging due to the narrow width and tight fit, which all factors into me trying to use the same set of rims for track tires. Pretty sure I need to go 285/30 rather than 275/35 due to the rubbing

I have the R2's and my wife has the Ultra Grip.

Both great tires, the R2's on the 1M are quite impressive on snow/ice but the softness on dry takes getting used to.

If Apex made ARC-8 in 18x9 in 1M offset I would have went with that and 235s - that would still allow me to do 275/35 for track rubber but nope, didn't happen

For anybody that was interested, Michelin Pilot A/S 3 245/40R18 on 18x9.5 +22 ARC-8 exceeded the stock front setup on the outside diagonals by 2.22mm and rubbed approximately 1 full turn going forward, definitely less than 1 full turn going backward or going down hill (even a parking ramp). For comparison, Hankook RS3v2 275/35R18 exceeds the outside diagonals by 3.91mm (Dunlop ZII 3.48mm). 285/30R18 would never be a problem because it's so much shorter

Now had I went 18x9.5 +30 (using +35 wheels and 5mm spacer ) would be just right for 245/40R18 - short 0.2mm outside and 0.47mm inside

I'm just about to purchase a set of 270M's with winter 235/40/18 Pilot Alpins on them, would like to put the 15mm spacers on the rear that others here have fitted also and confirm make the set up look a bit better. I'm based in the UK any idea where I can buy them and what the specific product name / pattern / code number would be to ensure that I'm getting the right piece? Thanks

Has anyone noticed that the BMW winter setup lowers the car considerably compared to summer tires? Not exactly what one would like for winter.

I've ordered Blizzak WS80 in 245x40x18 (with the newer fender-liners). Putting them on tomorrow - we'll see if they rub.

I did have rubbing with the PA3s in 235x40x18, until the liners were replaced. Since then no problem with those or summer PSSs in 245x40x18 up front.

moving from 19s to 18s also makes everything lower....

i had rubbing with my Nokian Hakkapeliitta R2s last year (245/40/18 all around) but after the new fender liners the problem is totally solved! The fender lines were replaced by the dealer free of charge last year.

got my winter wheels put on last week! time for some fun!
