Only compliments (and lots of stares) for me. The most memorable compliment came from a guy at a gas station. He asked me how I liked my 135i and if it was fast. I replied that it's very fast and I got a speeding ticket already. He then lets out a "Hell yeah!"

The day i got my car, i drove by the mall and this guy walking with his freinds was yelling and was pissed off at the site of my car. I remember him saying something like " you know how much money he spent on that car? " " that shit is slow, my car blah blah blah " at that point i was really confused as to why he would openly hate on a brand new shiny blue B.m.w that he has never seen before.
Anyway. ive gotten many many thumbs up just driving along from people in all types of cars. This one lady chased me down in her Honda accord to ask me how i liked the car and that she was going to test drive all the new b.m.w in the near future. Later up the road a guy in a brand new 328i sedan pulls up next to me and says frantically " oh crap, that's the 1 series?! i should have waited " i got a thumbs up from a z4 M driver the other day. Other bmw drivers, new and old always eye ball me and my car. eye contact is always made when i pass someone else in a bimmer. MAD |

As a DD mine flies mostly under the radar, but I've had a few compliments on it here and there. BMWs are common in Charlotte, and regrettably the vast majority are owned by banking-money badge snobs who don't even know the 1 series exists.
Only one bit of semi-hate from a guy in my neighborhood. We were hanging out at the community pool talking cars and he mentioned that he thought my car was tbe GFs (I have a Blue Water convertible, so fair enough). He wanted to make a beer run and I was sober so I offered to drive. Started the car ahead of time to let it warm up, he jumps in, I took him the long way down a couple of back roads that I know well with the snails on full boil. He gets out of the car, face white as a ghost, proceeds to store's bathroom and pukes his ass off. I've had a couple of the "cute" comments from women, I could care less about that. I like the color, and the "issues" that come with it are certainly a fair trade off for not having to spend half my life maintaining and detailing a dark colored car or having my 3rd silver car in a row (not that there's anything wrong with either of those things). As for the neighbor, haven't heard anything more from him about the car. Saw him at the pool today and asked him if he wanted to go for a ride. He declined . |

I get a compliment at least once a day which is surprising because i thought the 135i would be a complete sleeper. at the same time i get a lot of hate and the occasional stinger being overly aggressive and dangerous. I do enjoy the attention though from all different kinds of people both male and female, and compliments are always nice.

Mine mostly goes unnoticed. I do notice stares from other BMW drivers and plenty of racer-wannabes try to "race" me: Golf R32, Mustangs, even Fusion(?). I guess the 1er just looks too innocent. But be careful - it bites! I got compliments from Boxster owner and E36 325. The older lady was very nice and complimented my car but she thought it was 3 series though. The best reaction -5 minutes after I got home after taking delivery my neighbor literally yelled in disbelief: What??? No way!!!

I have never heard anything but good things by my car.
I get compliments on a regular basis which is of course nice, but ultimately it all comes down to me smiling every day I drive the car - which is worth much more. I do also get a lot of dorks who think they are gonna race me to the next stoplight in their old crap car. :P But I guess my car is seeking that kind of attention.

I was following behind in the familymobile while my wife was driving the 1er last night. It looks so great in motion, better than parked. Beautiful car.
So, complement from myself.

Damn straight. I had a terrible experience on the PA turnpike this weekend. Some idiot in a pontiac vibe tried to crush me into a guardrail and when I laid on my horn, he reacted as if it were somehow *my* fault that he doesn't know how to check his blindspot.
Road rage shenanigans ensued with him pulling even with a semi and staying there so he could periodically brake into me. Eventually he pulled far enough ahead of the truck (actually, I think the truck saw what was going on and slowed down). He tried to brake again to box me in, but I was able to sneak out in time and moved about a 1/4 mile down the road, thinking that was the end of it. But it wasn't. About a minute later I saw him charging up in my rearview, probably doing at least 90. He must have wanted to play more games, and had clearly deluded himself into thinking he could get by me without me wanting. Letting him back in front was unacceptable. In spite of his 10mph advantage, I was soon going about 15mph faster than him, thinking "do you really think you can catch this thing in a pontiac ****ing vibe? I left him far behind this time, leaving nothing to chance. I hate breaking the 100mph barrier, but at this point I was even less comfortable with spending time with a maniac. But to your point, CrazyIvan, most people have no idea what this car can do, and it's looks betray none of its prowess. I was not pumped up by burning this idiot, just relieved that my car's power made it so I wouldn't have to deal with him any more. End rant.

Nothing but complements.
A couple of times after parking with my top-down for a quick errand I've come back and found people hanging around checking out my car and then asking me questions. Mostly it seems to be noticed only by other BMW and performance car drivers. Otherwise it just melts into the sea of Bimmers in Silicon Valley. |

Easily a compliment a day - while driving or parked - new exhaust has made car louder as well - but nothing crazy which is perfect.

Ditto. I get compliments all the time. The best is when I come out to my car from a store and see and hear people talking about my 135. They always say nice car.
I even got a thumbs up from a new M3 the other day!

I've only gotten complements from friends and family; no strangers in the 4 months of ownership. I get a lot of looks and head-turns though. Good enough for me.

Lots of compliments from strangers. I've even had a couple people cut across lanes of traffic or follow me across a parking lot to talk about the car. Seems like the men know generally about the car (but usually not what engine it has), women just think it is a nice car or confuse it for a 3-series.

I occasionally get the "girls car" comments but its from the idiots who are either clueless about cars or think only men drive lifted f250's....

I love my 135i... I still can't get over the compliments!! It's happening on a daily basis at the very minimum. The 1 series definitely has appeal with the females, I've been asked for my number a handful of times now and I still get girls yelling out "sexy car" or "take me for a spin!". Of course these kind of women are probably only giving me time because of my car but I don't really care and in the moment I'm loving it haha. At the end of the day I'll always take something like that as a compliment and an appreciation towards my car. Some of my mates didn't believe me until they went for a ride with me...

I have owned my '07 335 for about 7 months and I have to say now I really want to trade it in for a 135 coupe. The 1 look has totally grown on me, and there is just something cooler about the car than my coupe that I can't quite put my finger on. It just seems sportier and built for more of a driving experience.
My Sales Rep knows to call me if he gets a 6MT in with at least the sports package and we'll seriously talk. Only drawback is same motor w/same issues, but I am willing to take that chance with a 1. Sad to say but I would definitely not buy another 335! |

A statement that can be applied to a great deal of things, ESPECIALLY current American politics, is one of my favorite quotes of all time. Came from Einstein,
"Great ideas encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds". Whether you are driving the entry level BMW of the 3 Series, whether you are in a cheapy Pontiac Vibe, etc, in some way these people feel and KNOW they are mediocre. So they will lash out at those who are clearly better. Next time that someone ever gives a negative comment on the 1, remember this statement, and then evaluate the source of the negative comment. I guarantee you, you will begin to laugh at them, because they will be comical in nature to you. ESPECIALLY if you think that a Pontiac Vibe has ANY level of coolness. Now that is funny!
